What is this ‘thing’

Afternoon all,

I found this piece of copper on the beach the other day and would love to know what it is... I picked it up when fishing down in the Purbecks, below the military firing ranges, my best guess was something from a shell of some sort? Any educated guesses would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry can't help on the ID, but it doesn't strike me as being particularly "military" though?

I was basing this on the grooves in one side, they’re slightly angled so wondered if this was something to do with barrel rifling.
