As per thread title.

Far too often thread titles appear such as:-

Recommend me a hedge trimmer.

Washing machines, talk to me.

Surely the inclusion of a please or thank you would not go amiss?

Thank you so much for taking up your valuable time to read this. Have a great day. smile

I think it’s just an extension of how people interact online without the pressure of having to look someone in the eye when speaking like that. I always overlay a Danny Dyer accent when I see thread OP’s phrased in that way.

I particularly dislike that type of request - as it is phrased as a demand rather than a question.

If you're talking about the opening post in a thread, then I agree that people just tend to askdemand (on any social media platform) and want to be spoonfed information.

On thread titles though, I think it's better that they are concise and to the point, as it makes it easier to scan through them all and find the ones I feel will be worth reading or contributing to. I see such topics as building a helpful database so people who need help can find these in the future and don't need to post the same question again (hard to type that and keep a straight face though).

I hate "talk to me" though, at least give us a clue what kind of topic this is!

Pistonheads used to be great for decent manners (and grammar obviously. hehe )
Unfortunately it has become the victim of its own success and the rot set in a while ago.
Not everyone who forgets a please or thank you deserves to be consigned to the council thread, but some of them. biggrin

I take the “talk to me” thing as a lighthearted reference to Terry Tibbs, hence it doesn’t bother me.

At the end of the day, there are more important things to worry about. We are all different so need to be tolerant. smile

I agree with the Danny Dyer voice comment. I assume the title is in jest, especially if the main body is more pleasant.

Its better than when someone tried to shoehorn the whole topic in to the title! :-)

Because "Please washing machines, talk to me." would come across as lonely and sad. hehe

I don't mind brusque titles, lack of Ps and Qs only becomes an issue for me when directed at someone, not when asked of the masses.

True, but if every thread title was phrased like that you might change your mind. When I skim through for things to read I prefer the shorter, cut-to-the-chase version smile

(especially when reading on a phone where screen real estate is at a premium. Else all the threads would be "Please, if you don't mind me asking, which ...")

Good afternoon. One could argue this very thread should actually be entitled “Would someone kindly enlighten me regarding the lack of manners on this forum”

Just saying..

I agree with this, for the most part. Thread titles, particularly on subforums like The Lounge where pretty much anything goes, are fine to be kept brief as the main body of the message / request will be in the first post. It's like those people who send you an email with their question in the subject line and a blank message, folks generally skim-read thread titles and email subjects so they can avoid the ones they don't want to open. Longer thread titles make it slightly less convenient to skim through, which includes politeness such as please and thank you.

That said, not that I'm gatekeeping or anything, but if I opened a thread titled "petrol lawnmowers, talk to me", I'd be much more inclined to help someone who writes a polite request, rather than just "I need a new mower, can you find me one". If you can't be bothered to ask your question politely, why should I be bothered to waste my time typing out a reply?

100% with you on the social media aspect though. I recently listed a few bits for free on facebook. The number of "interested" and "yes please" comments with no follow up was noteworthy - again, if you're not going to make the effort to just send me a message asking, then why should I make any effort to give you something for free?
