Could you recommend me a raincoat please?

A sou'wester. Now there is a word you don't hear much, apparently it comes from the Northsea fishermen and describes the storms they had to work in.

I learned the hard way that my old raincoat isn't the slightest bit waterproof anymore, so am on the hunt for a new one. Any recommendations? Doesn't have to be too flash or expensive, just something decent quality I can sling over the top of everything else to keep the rain off.

I've had loads over the years whilst hiking in the hills. Your Rabs, Outdoor Research, etc.

None have been as good as my cheap and cheerful Regatta Outdoors. Few years old now and keeps me bone dry and (and this is really important) breathable.

I'd be inclined to go Musto - all the yachties I know swear by them and they know a thing or several about the importance of staying dry.

Have a look at Stutterheim, Swedish brand, if it's good enough for their climate, should be more than enough for ours.

most important is to get one that is long and wide enough, as it 'bells', to take the water beyond your lower trouser and footwear.

You can go mental on pricing with technical gear.

I have some basic £10-15 rain jackets rolled up in my backpacks that perform fine for the odd downpour, and a £575 Mountain Equipment Kongur MRT for Mountain/Cave Rescue/Alpine activities.

I believe that is an oilskin replica. It could get expensive as I would need a Stetson, horse and a Smith & Wesson to complete the look.

Coats like that are very practical, though.

There again, I have a waxed brimmed hat that is great in the rain, but most people would probably not wear.

I've just had a raincoat from Private White VC:

and it's ace. Made in the UK by Mancs, not by Vietnamese orphans. They do repairs & alterations, and quality of the fabric & fittings seems great - albeit I've not had my coat for all that long yet.
