Unique gift for birth of first born

Mrs Jinkster is expecting out first baby at the end of October. What can you recommend I buy the baby on her first day. I was thinking the newspaper and an archive box.

Massive box of nappies, and noise cancelling headphones.

We had a framed 3d plaster cast of babies hand and foot with a name and DOB plaque on it done.

Others might think it's cringe or tacky but we think it's a nice keepsake.

There's quite a few places that do it.

When my son was born we done a footprint and handprint and laminated. I still keep his footprint in my wallet after nearly 13 years

We have our grandsons umbilical cord in an envelope in the loft.

We also have two bank accounts that we have been saving £10 per month in for both our grandchildren for their 21st birthdays, which will give them over £2k each as a little surprise.

You want a present for the baby right? Not the missus?

Get her Gmail account with her name if you can and send some pictures to it over the next 16 or so years, that's what I've done.

For the missus: a box of Chardonnay and some ear plugs.

Bought my son a watch when he was born, nothing expensive just a nice divers style piece that he can have when he’s old enough.

Also did the gmail account thing that we send pics and milestones to.

It's your baby? I assumed you were asking about buying a present for someone one else's.

If yours, Nappies, wipes, clothes, baby toys and so on.

A set of earplugs. Not so you don't hear things. But when the little one and OH lose their st at the same time, it helps you keep a calm head to resolve it.

My wife set up a direct debit into a building society account to funnel away the child support payments she started getting. She did this for the lifetime of the payments, which gave my son a nice bit of bunce on his 18th birthday.

Probably more appreciated than the traditional pipe of port, anyway.

I think times have moved on a bit and people are going towards having less 'stuff' - that's the kind of thing that will sit in a box in the loft until they die and it gets cleared out by someone else wondering whether they want a bible from 90 years ago and an engraved pewter tankard from the day their husband/ dad/ whatever was born.
