Naming - Blood Relatives
Discussion
I know a guy who's family only recognise Blood Relatives.
Example. His Father, His Mother.
Father's Brother is His Uncle, but the Uncle's wife in NOT his Aunty ??
Father's Sister is His Aunty, but the Auny's husband is NOT his Uncle,
Same with His Mother's side of the family.
So it would seem, blood relatives only get the 'family title'.
Ever heard of this before ????? I never have.

My wife's mother was a very controlling woman, and a religious zealot to boot. She always told her children that their spouses 'were not family' and not to let them get in the way of their relationships with her and the others.
I didn't like her very much.
My own family were entirely different. When my mum's sister tragically died young, her husband, my Uncle Albert as it happened, remained a family member, as did his second wife and her kids when he remarried. They were always aunt and uncle to me, just as much as before.
I'd tell you which of the two families was, and remains, the happier one, but you've probably guessed.

Sadly I know someone like this - his aunt is his aunt but her husband of 60ish years is 'not really family'.

My Mum often has the attitude of "Blood is thicker than water" and as a consequence sometimes panders to distant cousins and relatives who the rest of us have absolutely no time for, no interest in, nothing in common with, or haven't had any contact with for decades. He's a t
tOccasionally she will drag my Dad across the country to a wedding or some 30th anniversary party, hosted by some relatives that they haven't seen in about 16 years.
Me and my brother are close to our Mum and Dad, and one of our cousins who is a really nice lady. Thats it. We don't bother with any other relatives.
Mum will sometimes be slightly flakey with her relationships with her friends, but if a distant relative that she hasn't seen for years phones up, she's right there. I find it all a bit bizarre. I blame her Irish hertitage. Big families and all that.
I value my friends far more than relatives.

When my Dad died during my childhood, his brother, my blood Uncle, came to our house, whilst Dad's body was still lying there before the funeral, and told my Mum that neither she nor me and my sister were family to him any more and he wouldn't be wanting anything to do with us any more. If I ever see him again I'm not even sure I'd speak, let alone give him an affectionate title like Uncle. I ardently hope the next time I hear of him is when I refuse to attend his funeral after he suffers a particularly painful and protracted accident involving a range of both blunt and sharp objects, and perhaps a swarm of bees and a few rabid sheep.
Since then I've always considered the bonds of friendship I have made in my life to be stronger than bonds of blood, because they are with people who have chosen to be part of my life. Relatives? I can't count too many I give much of a damn about.

Of course if the incoming new member is loaded it changes
My wife's Godfather regarded (and would often introduce) her as his daughter and that caused a fair amount of antagonism from family members who took every opportunity to point out that they were blood relatives and she wasn't and therefore shouldn't be included in his Will.
My sister in law has remarried since my kids were young so the fella they call Uncle is now married into some other family and the fella she's now with doesn't get the Uncle label, which I'm ok with as he's weird.
My Auntie was married 4 times as I grew up, last time to a toyboy who was only a few years older than me, no way I'm calling him Uncle, so I can see why this makes sense.

My Mum often has the attitude of "Blood is thicker than water"...
Interestingly it seems many people mis-quote that, interpreting it as meaning blood ties are most important. Apparently the full original saying was, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," meaning that alliances formed by choice are more important than those made solely because of a genetic link.It may of course be bulls
t but many sayings become corrupted over time (eg. jack of all trades etc) so it's entirely possible.Edited by Funk on Monday 27th September 14:01

So does his father not consider his mother as family, and vice versa?Example. His Father, His Mother.
