I've Googled it and read the results but WTF is gaslighting.
It's a term used all the time on Twitter (I know my fault for using Twitter).
Someone accused me of it not so long ago and all I was doing was arguing with them over some pedantic point of grammar.
I told them to fk off.
Seemed to do the job as a witty riposte.

gaslight
/ˈɡaslʌɪt/
Learn to pronounce
verb
gerund or present participle: gaslighting
manipulate (someone) by psychological means into doubting their own sanity.
"in the first episode, Karen Valentine is being gaslighted by her husband"

Seems a pretty straightforward explanation?

Mr Smith starts hanging out with the 21 year old intern. They go to the pub together, he pops round to her flat, they share WhatsApp messages.

Mrs Smith questions this behaviour and says she finds it upsetting.

Mr Smith admonishes her saying there's nothing going on, it's all in her head, she is mistaken as he was out with Alan that night, she's imagining it all. He gets cross and annoyed with her any time she brings the subject up suggesting she might need professional help to address her paranoia etc etc.

Or variations thereof.

It’s fairly straightforward.

It’s a form of manipulation, and when done well it can leave people questioning their version of events or, in extreme cases, their own sanity.

It’s quite commonly used in Domestic Abuse. Typically starts off low level, before the perpetrator is in full control. It can be devastating.

Sadly, people on social media misuse the term.

It's already been explained to you once, and you said you understood it.

I remember him saying he knows exactly what it is. I can’t believe we’re having to have this conversation again, Zarco always does this. It’s getting a bit silly now, I’ve almost had enough.

I'd assumed the term was pretty well known by now tbh.

You're imagining it, you're too sensitive etc.

Do you watch Coronation Street? It is the abuse Geoff pulled on Yasmine.

Gaslight is a 1944 American psychological thriller film directed by George Cukor and starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Angela Lansbury (in her film debut). Adapted by John Van Druten, Walter Reisch, and John L. Balderston from Patrick Hamilton's play Gas Light (1938), it follows a young woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing that she is descending into insanity.

So it's used incorrectly most of the time then.

Putting my agony uncle hat on for a moment, it sounds to me like Mrs Smith is a c**kblocker and Mr Smith should move in to said flat with utmost haste and make hay whilst the sun shines.

Corrie actually portrayed it very well. Set over many months, it showed how it affected more than one of his partners with devastating results.

The original film is, though, quite horrific on a different level.

Without wishing to be a total pedant, the original film is actually Thorold Dickinson - directed British film from 1940, with Anton Walbrook. I mention this because it is terrific, Walbrook is mesmerisingly evil in it. Much better than the Hollywood remake.

I've been gaslit. It's a crap experience.

Erm...

pepper up
to make your hair and make-up oh so sexy to perfection, putting that "too hot to handle" outfit on, getting a little sizzle in your step and getting so glamorous you piss glitter for that spicy encounter with that special someone. Getting ready for love making. To get ready for a night out, dates, clubs, bars, anything that requires looking your best hot hot hotty self.
"Hold on baby i'm peppering up... just you wait." "OMG did you see that girl? she's so peppered up and she knows it!" "Kay i'll call you soon, i'm going to go pepper up"
