I have just bought some shoes from Carmina for my wife. The website is in GBP and English. However I twigged afterwards that Carmina are based in Spain.

Am I going to get a VAT + fees bill before I can have the shoes? Or as they are ostensibly operating in the UK is it down to them?

I bought some shoes from DC Shoes UK site the other month, but they were actually shipped from France.

Didn't have to pay anything extra, but it was under £135 though..

I bought a ceiling fan from Create Ikhos who are based in Spain for more than £135 and that was where it shipped from. However, they have a UK registered Ltd. And UK VAT number. It came via UPS and I wasn't charged anything extra.

It occurs to me that I have also just placed a big order for shirts from abroad. Wonder if they will be hit.

Have already cancelled an order from Italy because the VAT will now make it poor value.

A bit of an update here. I have revived a dispatch email in Spanish, saying that DHL is the carrier and that I must not pay them in cash.

I am not planning to pay them at all!

The seller’s website says:

TAXES
All prices include the corresponding VAT when applies. The acquisitions with the European Union are subject to VAT. The acquisitions outside European Union and Canary islands, Melilla and Ceuta, are VAT exempt, without prejudice to the application of taxes and custom duties pursuant to the regulations in force in each of these territories.

As far as I am aware and can establish from the T&Cs I have paid VAT in the advertised price, ergo I shouldn’t have to pay it again.

I hope that I am being unduly concerned here, I just have a feeling that DHL is going to ask me to pay duties before releasing the delivery.

I'm pretty sure they will, because I'm pretty sure my wife bought a pair of riding boots from this company a couple of months ago and got stung at delivery.

I'll check with her when she's off the phone and update this.

Spoke to her. Twice in the last year she's had to pay VAT on boots she's bought from the EU. Prepare yourself! laugh

Ah, well in which case I will give Carmina the opportunity to cover the cost or collect the order themselves.

I read those T&Cs as saying that puchases shipping to EU countries will be charged VAT at the point of sale, whereas purchases for shipping outside the EU will not. However it doesn't say that the UK won't want to collect taxes and duties on the purchase, which might very well be collected by the importer (ie DHL) before you get your hands on them. It even says 'without prejudice to the applications of taxes and customs duties....in each of these territories'. In any case, VAT and duties aren't the same thing and even if one isn't charged, the other may be.

You might be lucky though, certainly some people have been.

For reasons that I don't understand, the boots were £348 on the site, but the Paypal bill was for £348.48.

Edited to add: The price on the site is about the value if the boots, maybe a bit more. Fully priced if you like. If any more were added, they would be far too expensive. I think the site price is an inclusive price.

Expect a VAT bill and admin charge from DHL. Shouldn’t get hit with customs if they are made in the EU as trade deal covers this.

DHL won't charge you or ask you to pay before releasing the item for delivery. They'll expedite the delivery quickly (as you've seen from the dispatch mail you received) to ensure you get the item with no issues, and then about 3 months or so later (might be quicker now) an invoice will drop through the door from their UK admin demanding payment within 28 days for the relevant VAT, plus whatever their admin fee is based on the cost of the order, etc.

Happened to me earlier this year when i ordered some reproduction car parts. Parts were delivered via DHL within 48 hours of order in late February and the invoice arrived in early June giving me 28 days from the date on the invoice to pay them. Date of the invoice vs date arrived in the post meant there were just 14 days left.

Thankfully in my case i managed to get the invoice cancelled as i could prove they shouldn't have invoiced me as, similar to LandieMark above, the order complied with the VAT collection at the point of sale due to a UK Ltd & VAT number. Even the rating code on the invoice showed it as a non chargable order, yet for some reason DHL had decided to charge anyway. In any case an "admin error" due to "adapting to Brexit" was blamed, otherwise i'd have been expecting to hand over about £100 including their admin fee.

Seller should've removed the local/EU vat (as per their T's & C's) buyer should've checked at point of order/invoice that the seller's vat had indeed been removed, and then should fully expect to pay UK vat. Other than clearance fees (some carriers take the piss) there shouldn't be an extra cost buying from the EU, vat off/vat on should be cost neutral.
