My outside security cameras being plagued by spiders just now, one camera cleared once a day for eight days.

Put a light mist coat of WD40 over camera but cleaned lens after, bingo spider has gone.

The oil smell might put them off or the oil stick to the hairs on their legs. Might even prevent web sticking to camera, dunno but it works.

We bought some extensions for the James/Henry vacuum cleaner, so i can vaccum the critters and webs off from the ground, it works too, worse cameras are the ones with a little hood because it gives them a nice hidey hole, the hooded cameras appear to be best for not suffering from direct sunlight but you'll need a strong vacuum to fetch the spider out from under.

Also pays to keep bird feeders in your garden, we have lots of blue tits and have seen them arrive on the camera and pluck the spider.

Nice tip about WD40 though, will keep that one in mind.

Years ago I got to work and tge occupier of the flat above told me the burglar alarm had been going off during the night.
The boss was on holiday so I called the alarm company. The engineer arrived and climbed up to the sensor. ' GOD, its hot up here, did you leave the heating on all night?".
' Er, yes I did'
' Well, rthats what set it off'
'Oh God, the boss will go mental".
" I'll say it was a a spider on the sensor"
"Really? Thanks"

A few days later the boss comes back.
" Everythong OK?"
" I had to all the alarm engineer "
" Apparently it was a spider in the sensor "
"Oh, OK. I've heard about that happening "

Bacon saved.

Had this a couple of times with spiders setting the smoke alarms off in the dead of night. Currently bemused watching the regular patrol route of neighbourhood cats triggering the CCTV.

I like the idea of keeping a bird feeder near to the camera, maybe install a rest for the birds close to the camera when it is installed

The birds will trigger the camera defeating the purpose of switching the recorder on?

Spiders supposedly don't like conkers. Tape a conker to the camera.

It is a week since I put wd40 onto cameras, no spiders so it seems to work. Dunno how long it will last but it is better than cleaning them every morning.

Our recorders are almost always triggered during daylight with birds and our dogs anyway, seldom do any birds fly around during darkness, and its during the dark when spider webs create issues with the infa red camera capability.
You'd barely know there was a web across the lens in daylight, but the same web almost entirely blocks the camera's view in the dark.

Thanks for the tip, I'm going to try this, especially on the doorbell where they are particularly annoying.

Think it would work on my wing mirror?

Good point, it probably will, downside is you might get the oil on your clothes.

I am going to try it though

Same in my house. Eventually caught one of the little bds and turned him into a smudge, then bought some spider killer spray and soaked the ceiling all around the smoke alarm, and it hasn't happened again.

My Nest doorbell spotted a spider and advised me at 4:38am that it had seen a person. The webbing over the camera made it look like it had been smashed and I was not at home at the time. For a minute I was in a right flap thinking my house was being broken into.
