I think I heard domestic abuse :(

I woke up with a bit of a start this morning, because I could hear a man's voice continually shouting "COME 'ERE/COME 'ERE NOW!". Now I've heard this before, but it sounded more muffled and further away - I'd always assumed it was someone shouting for their dog in the fields behind our house (still unpleasant, granted).

This time, however, I could hear the voice very clearly, and more worryingly a woman's voice. I couldn't make out what she was saying but she sounded scared/terrified if you know what I mean, sounding like she was pleading. This must have gone on for 5 minutes or so intermittently. The voice did get muffled (maybe they shut a window?) but I couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from, and it sounded like it was from our street. Unfortunately the acoustics of where we live are such that sound does reverberate around and it is difficult to pinpoint the origin. My wife has her theories however....

Now, everyone argues, and can be loud, but this wasn't an argument, this was a man shouting at a woman who appeared to be pleading with him.

I couldn't call the police - where would I direct them to go to after all?!

I was tempted to put a post on the local spotted facebook page (a bit council I know) but just to let the individual know that the gig is up and people know what he's doing. My wife reckons this will do more harm than good as an abuser will blame the victim, and it will make it worse "people know what you made me do, you're going to get it now" sort of thing etc. I didn't hear if it got physical, but then if they shut the windows and it was indoors, I wouldn't necessarily anyway.

Any thoughts fellas?

call the police, even if they send a car to drive about the area it may make the aggressive person calm down if they see it

No criticism, genuinely, but call the old bill. They're in a much better position to locate the the people from previous call records in the local vicinity or just following the noise than you would be in your pants in your bedroom.

Don't bother calling 101, you will be on hold for 30 minutes and then have to answer inclusion and diversity questions...

Just go on your local force''s website and log it online. Then forget about it until such time they contact you, which is unlikely if no crime is reported.

I would inform the police, they may have intelligence /previous dealings with people on the street and could be domestic related, step up patrols etc. Better to let the police know and they not do anything (out of your hands) than keep quiet if you have a genuine concern.

The police may have a marker on PNC for nearby addresses where Domestic violence has occured previously.

Definitely worth giving the police a heads up.

I'll get in touch with them! The worst would be if I do nothing and something happens.

I've just called the Police - they thanked me for my call, and although they seemed reluctant to send a patrol around the local streets at the time the shouting was heard (which I was a little disappointed at) they asked that as soon as I hear it again (if ever) I give them a call...

I heard similar in the past (shouting, threatening and then what sounded like plates being smashed) - the difference being I knew the property as it was flats just behind us.

I called 999 and they did send a patrol out very quickly. Unfortunately I had asked that they didn't come to me as I didn't want any repurcussions from the neighbour (nasty piece of work) but they parked outside my house and knocked on my door.

Luckily they weren't seen by the neighbour as I heard him yelling "Who called the police, I'm going to kill them etc."

I'm not a powerfully built company director so I didn't own up ;-)
