As my oldest son heads off to his first NYE party with a ‘sleep over’, I gave him a talk about behaving himself.

And as I sit here feeling thankful I’m not going out, I remember some of my most disgraceful NY eves from when I was young and carefree.

There was the time I got drunk and snogged my family friends daughter in front of hers and my parents and got an embarrassing lecture from them all the next day.

The time I went to a black tie do and got drunk and knocked over a wall to floor display of things that broke, got home in a really bad way and my dad put me in a cold shower and made me go to a New Year’s Day sailing race I’d previously agreed to do and where I got hit in the head by the boom of the yacht and ended up with a hangover and concussion.

The time I got a lift home from a party with a mate on his scooter and we fell off and I trashed my new watch and trousers I got for Christmas.

The time I snogged an ugly girl who wanted a shag and when I refused, she said I was “just like my brother” who turned out she’d been with a few weeks earlier. Obviously I took the piss out of him and missed out any details about me snogging her too.

Anyone have any misspent youth grim or awesome New Years stories they want to share with the group?

Does "sleep over" still mean dying in a field somewhere after a few 2 litre bottles of White Lightning? laugh

Proof (if any was needed) that PH is just dadsnet! hehe

Most worthy of mention was waking up the morning after to find someone had stolen my pillow. I abused everyone within range about it until the parents of the friend we were staying with said it was them, and they'd taken it because I'd thrown up on it. They then kept me in because hang over but a) tactical chunder and b) aged 15 so immune to that. irked

Blimey.

Don't hate the playa. Hate the game.

The best I ever achieved was as a cocky 18 year old in a crappy Essex nightclub getting ironed out by a fat bird with "more gold than Mr T". Evidently she didn't appreciate my opening chat up line gambit of "nice bangers" and punched me in the head with a fist full of sovereigns.

Since then, I've stayed in.

Home, Leicester Sq on 31st Dec 2000 with the Chemical brothers in the main room and a couple of good mates at the time.

Have no recollection of leaving the club or travelling until woken abruptly at Southampton Central at about 7am because the train was terminating due to a fallen tree near Brockenhurst and the guard was emptying the train. Luckily So'ton was my destination and I didn't end up in Weymouth. Walked the few miles home in near freezing temperatures in a t-shirt thinking how quiet it was.

How 21 years flies by.

Aged about 16, arranged a new years eve party at my parents believing they were out for the night. They weren't.

They were however, remarkably sporting about being evicted from their home for the evening.

Sorry about that folks..

You went out, got off your pickle and nearly, yes nearly missed the stop on your train?

There are elements of this story missing. For starts, who nicked your coat? The tramp outside the Hippodrome, you traded it for a "snog", space unicorns?

Nearly missing your (very long train journey) stop is a massive win!. 2 hours on a train, I'm happy to be in the correct county. Frost bite regardless! Or it was unusually warm when you went out.

The most infamous in our family was me on NYE 1999.

Went out as a 16 year old, got hammered, came home (parents house obviously) proceeded to vomit everywhere. Decided the best course of action would be to hoover it all up using the new Dyson and promptly went to bed.

That story is trotted out every year by my mother, the Dyson was never the same again.

NYE 2000/01: Starting at a house party, three of us consumed 2 litres of Smirnoff & Red bull in about 20 minutes, whereafter the night went downhill a bit. We walked into town taking in a few pints en route and ended up at an illegal rave for a couple of red stripes. Devastated I’d ripped my Hugo Boss jeans jacket (I know) I left alone. For some reason I walked a very long route home (for those that know Bristol I was at Cumberland basin) before a near fateful error. I needed to cross a dual carriageway and jumped the central reservation barrier. What my brain hadn’t worked out was I’d already crossed all four lanes and I was making my way over a drop to the road below:

I ended up in the bushes to the right in front of the blue offices relatively unscathed. I have no idea how long I was out cold, but came around very very sore and very very sober. A few meters across and I’d have landed in the road, a few more and I’d have been in the river Avon.

Not my finest moment, but one I was lucky to recover from without any breakages. To be honest a couple of broken bones would’ve been a good idea, ti give me a proper shake up. I didn’t learn to pace myself until nearly drowning whilst nightswimming in Newquay (due to forgetting I couldn’t swim) a few years later, but that happened in summertime so it’s a story for another thread!

Yes, I bet Corrie McKeague is regretting those last few vodkas as the bin lorry of doom took him away

Why do Brits drink so much that death is logical outcome of the dangerous mixture of high places and gravity ?

Our nation is built on a can do spirit fuelled by alcohol based youthful misadventure and this kind of reaching for the stars drunken hedonism created not only the greatest empire the world has ever seen but also a nation leading engineering music design and the arts and a political system copied the world over.

Unless you ended up like the Bristol Icarus above who flew too close to the sun and ended up under a 60s flyover.

That’s what’s wrong with the country today, not enough binge drinking and hedonism.

Aged about 15, went to a party in Bayswater, left about 10:30 to go to another party in Fulham, signal failure on the District line meant I saw in the new year stuck between Notting Hill Gate & High St Kensington.

Wild times.

First (not banned because of covid) NYE today since most of my mates had kids. All met up for drinks mid afternoon and reminisced on all the many drunken NYE nights out before kids arrived…

Faceplanted a urinal wall for a couple of hours at a warehouse party in Brum... Didn't understand why the lower half of my jeans had turned bright blue until a few days later when the promoter apologised for having a chemical toilet leak everywhere...
