We’ve just got hold of this old painting of somewhere in Eskdale, Cumbria. I’m pretty sure it’s not valuable (well, if it is, anyone who helps identify it is welcome to a small proportion of the sale proceeds!) but just for interest I’m trying to work out when and who it might have been painted by.

I know this is a bit random but there’s a lot of deep expertise around on Pistonheads. Can anyone make out what that signature in the bottom left is?

I reckon you’ve nailed that! His work seems to sell in the £500-£1500 range so worth doing something with it.

I cannot believe it - first reply on Pistonheads! I’d spent ages peering at that and trying to make it out. I think you’re bang on with J J Hughes (or at least, now you’ve said that I can’t unsee ‘J J Hughes’!) - will see if I can find a known J J Hughes signature on Google to compare.

Although I just guessed from looking at the sig, I did a bit of Googling after and now definitely think it is JJ Hughes - hopefully has a bit of value for you.

It’s not in great condition (a bit of paint flaking off, minor crumbling to the frame etc) and would probably cost more to restore than it’s worth, but knowing who it’s by (I’ve also just looked him up - turns out he was a pillar of the community in Birmingham as well as professional artist) definitely adds to our enjoyment of it. Thanks v much Scaleybrat!

Inspired by Bill Hicks,I used to sign each bible I found in a hotel left by the Gideons with “ Best wishes, Jesus of Nazareth “

That’s very ingenious - and I think it brings out an e and s more which would fit with Scaleybrat’s ‘J J Hughes’. Sadly not ‘John Constable’…
