Archive imagery

Does anyone on here know where I can see some archive imagery - like Street View on Google? I'm doing a bit of research on an old tobacconist (1970s?) and was trying to get a picture of it - presuming the most likely way was using archive Street View. Cheers.

Actual Google Street View only started in 2007 so you want find anything older there. Have you tried searching for a Facebook group for the town in question as they often have historical photos? Or even just search Google images for the name of the street.

We did the same for our place. Newpapers have old images, some have archives on line. The other source is your local historical society, who usually have images from postcards etc.

The best thing about newspapers is you also get to find out stories from people who lived there.

We had one early occupant who had an argument with a neighbour

Local facebook groups sometimes have groups that collate photos.

Try the local library, they will almost certainly have publications featuring photos of past times in the area.

Try the local council website - for example https://images.manchester.gov.uk/ is an excellent resource for the City of Manchester and surrounding areas.

Local facebook is worth a query. We often see stuff for our town in there. Also try the library. There may be local historians or groups too.
One local chap wrote a book on the town and in a photo from 1963
There was my aunt driving her car.

It was on Mill Lane in Macclesfield. I think it was number 5a - almost opposite the end of Lower Bank Street. It was called Kings and was a sweet shop too. The lady who ran it has died and I thought it would be nice to find a photo of the shop for her family. Cheers.

There are loads of photos of that road on Pinterest mate. Will be worth jumping on and trawling through and maybe getting in touch with the larger accounts on there. I’ll have a flick tomorrow
