Hi all

I work in the public sector and I have a potential opportunity to take a year out of work to focus on a social issue within the community. I think the idea is to get a sense of the subject town & understand what residents want to see change. Initially I'd be keen to hear what social issue is the biggest concern to you in your area.

With everything else going on around the world I understand how fortunate we are, at the same time I would like to contribute to society in a positive way and help to make a difference to peoples lives. Also its a full time paid position for a year and there will be several teams within 4-5 different areas and seems a great opportunity to step out of the normal 9-5 and work on something engaging and with the chance of making a big difference.

Thanks for your time

Littering, obvious why

Bike theft. This one is interesting as bike theft causes a lot more damage than initially apparent in terms of extra traffic on road, less social interaction from some more vulnerable people in society etc... There was a cop in the USA who started tryong to reduce bike crime in his city and it had lots and lots of beneficial impact on society.

Social housing being promised to locals, then filled with vermin from the large town at the far end of the County.

Mandatory prison terms for drug dealers.
Immediate deportation of illegal immigrants who already have deportation orders.
If someone is receiving welfare but are able bodied, give them a job with the local council tasked with removing graffiti.
Repeat drunk drivers to be banned from ever owning any cars/trucks or motorbikes. If caught driving, the car is to be seized.

I can guarantee I have more of a 'real' job than you do... What was the point in this?

Fair points but one of the two.

I'd say pick one issue - bike theft or littering or dog crap or anything else that could be tackled quickly - and focus resource on coming down hard on that single issue.

People who are guilty of the issue will stop doing it. The majority who aren't guilty will see something being done. Idea is go mile deep/inch wide rather than mile wide/inch deep.

If they don’t need you for 12 months, they don’t need you at all. Look for another job. The country’s fked. It’s beyond saving. Grow a moustache.

Alcohol misuse. But that probably requires more of a public health and societal change. So many lives seem to revolve around alcohol.
