Basically that’s not the offer. You’re right, give me cash and take thing; you can’t lose. It’ll become we need your bank details for *insert implausible reason here* or, as suggested, you take out insurance for the item. At some point during the “sale” they will ask you to give them money.
After reading loads of these types of stories on here about trying to sell stuff on gumtree and Facebook etc, I did warn my wife not to bother trying to sell an old electronic keyboard via these types of outlets, she gave up after leave the ad up on face book for a few days and around 10 contacts who where scammers..

Recently every time I've listed something on marketplace I get, within 2/3 minutes several messages along the lines of 'Does your item look like any of these <scamlink1> <scamlink2> if so I will buy it, usually from a stereotypical sounding name linked to a scam account. ..Even on free stuff I'm just trying to save from the bin. The accounts are unmonitored as I once replied with Yes, £900 and it's yours and it wasn't even read
I've seen it moaned about on local groups too so it's not just me. It's annoying but I just ignore and block them, which is a bit pointless as it's a different name each and every time. It must be automatic which is the bigger pisser
Trouble nowadays is facebook allows postage, and even defaults to it. Although the messages asking to post stuff are usually from normal people who are asking honestly, so that's not such a worry (they get ignored too unless it is tiny and can be hermes'd easily and the enquiring message is coherent and decent)
I bought a printer the other week that had been listed for ages and the bloke was genuinely surprised when I turned up on time (within 15 minutes of him giving me his address and saying he was at home) with full asking in folding. Said he'd had no end of crap over a £40 laser printer that wasn't printing brilliantly (solved by fitting the brand new black toner that came with it, the 3 brand new coloured toners are sat waiting for a few years until I'll need them)
