But as is the case, not everyone is taking it in the spirit intended.
What's the issue?
Me being the cynical person I am, I'm wondering what sort of data they're gathering.
Suddenly you've got thousands of people uploading a pic of their mugs, are they running some sort of facial recognition, pulling exif data or emails/phone numbers? Especially when they're probably processing stuff in Russia or China.
Maybe I'm over complicating things and it's just for fun

I think I've seen one of these spies.

You're right about where the data is going, the app is from Linerock Investments in Moscow and newprofilepic.com is registered via GoDaddy to someone based there too, presumably Linerock. Suddenly you've got thousands of people uploading a pic of their mugs, are they running some sort of facial recognition, pulling exif data or emails/phone numbers? Especially when they're probably processing stuff in Russia or China.

It's the same story as FaceApp from a few years ago.
So crims could use AI to animate the faces that are uploaded, in order to conduct fraud by creating accounts which need some sort of facial recognition/video upload.
And then you've got people giving away the names of pets, first schools, parent maiden names etc etc etc in the form of FB 'games'.

Apologies for the DM link
Warning issued over NewProfilePic app which sends data to Moscow https://mol.im/a/10802211 via https://dailym.ai/android

Yup, that’s how I’d see it. And then you've got people giving away the names of pets, first schools, parent maiden names etc etc etc in the form of FB 'games'.
But the masses do seem to put ‘it’s a laugh innit’ ahead of rationale thinking.
Never really understood it myself.
