Merely brushing the topic but there's a demon packaging trick I chanced upon on the 'net.
If you want to send something precious (say a Ming vase) you ake these steps.
1: Find a box big enough to provide some air space all around.
2: Find something to put inder the item so it stands clear of the bottom on the box.
3; Line the box with cling film.
4. Wrap the item fully with cling film and stand it in the box.
5. Mist around with a small spray of water.
6. Inject expanding builder's foam and wait.
7. Trim the excess off the top (a breadkinfe works.).
8. Seal the lid and Bingo...bombproof.

Oh yes, take a lookThis is a rifle stock I'm working on. It's wrapped in cling film in an open-topped box I made that's
lined with clingfilm.
Here it is after the foam was cured.
As you can see, it's ummarked and it can't rock on its new moulded bed when I drill it.
Someone asked about how to unpack the precious item. I used a breadknife to trim the excess foam
but the rest broke away from the stock easily with thumbnail pressure.

Your earlier description gave the impression you filled the box with foam to the top, completely encasing the object.but the rest broke away from the stock easily with thumbnail pressure.

That's exactly what I did. here's the foam curing...
The (full) paint tins stopped the foam pushing the stock upwards (it was sitting on two halves of a cut down cotton bobbin).
As you see, my gun stock, which is 65 years old, remained unmarked. If sending something precious, I'd
add a note describing how to remove the packing without damaging the contents.
