Valuing Coins...

Hi Folks, Wasn't sure where best to post.

I've got a massive box of old coins. Real mix of things, mostly 19th and 20th century stuff at quick glance. Probably over 2-300 in total.

I'm wanting to get them valued. On the off chance there is something ultra valuable in there, I need to find somewhere trustworthy - whilst I highly doubt anything is massively valuable, for all I know there is some value in there.

I'm based in Gloucestershire. Any first hand recommendations highly appreciated.

Anything of which you have multiples isn't valuable. Sort through them, find the unique items and then Google those, or take them to a specialist.

I had to do similar with a big pile of coins from my grandmother.

There are plenty of resources on t'internet to allow you to sort out the ones that stand a chance of being valuable in their own right.
Lots of them are worth far more for their silver content.

It all felt slightly surprising, but as one website said - no-one ever just throws coins away, even when they are pretty much worthless, they always get kept and hoarded at the back of drawers etc. So only the rarest and best unmarked condition ones end up being worth much.

The notes that were also included in the "collection" had managed to keep up with or slightly beat inflation, but it still wasn't megabucks!

Are any of the coins silver and from before 1947? Coppers will not be worth much if anything.

After 1947 (I think or maybe early 50's) "silver coins had no silver in them so unless v rare won't be worth much.

Silver 19th century coins can be worth a bit - depending on your definition of "a bit".

For example I have about 8 George III silver shillings from 1817. Good ones are worth about £150 to £300 depending on condition and specific issue - a lot depends on this.

17th and 18th century silver coins can be worth considerably more.

Even a humble silver 3 pence from around 1905 will be worth £30 - £60, again depending on condition etc.

Spinks & Son "Coins of England & the United Kingdom" is your go to reference book. You will find everything you need to know in there.

Condition and rarity is everything.

If you do find you have some decent condition silver older coins don't ever be tempted to clean the coins. Best way to lose 80% of the value unless you really know what you are doing!

Feel free to post up anything you think is interesting and I'll look it up if you like.

I'm no expert but I have a reasonably nice collection from when I used to do a bit of metal detecting. You'd be amazed what is lying in the fields. I have silver coins going back as far as the 11th century.

Lay them out in a big rectangle, take 5 pictures

All of them, then each 1/4 of the rectangle.

I had a few, I just bunged them on eBay with good pictures from all angles.
There’s a lot of coin collectors who scour eBay, and those worth any money were soon bought up.

Only two gold guineas in my collection, no sovereigns - yet! One from 1788 and the other from 1773

If the whole collection is similar to the coins on show I'd say there is some good value in there, just based on overall numbers and the fact that most appear to be silver.

Looking forward to seeing what you have hidden away inside the coin sleeves.

Sorting this has become somewhat more of a mission than I expected.

We've just done two different types - Half Penny and Half Crowns.... only to find the 'sorting' that had been done previously was not very thorough - and we found another 20-30 Half Pennies.

For the Half Crowns we have for 1947 or earlier there are 74 coins.

We're going to try and finish it all later tonight after the kids are in bed. I'll share the full register and some pictures.

Edit - clearly showing my age but I had Florins and Two shilling coins in different piles and was thinking - "what on earth is a Florin?"... Wiki has helped me there...
