The conventional and cliched advice is “shave your head”, and “shave your head and grow a beard”.

I’m mid-late 30s with a significantly receding hairline and I’ve tried both. I’m a bit sick of the shaved head look after 2 years. I’m able to grow a thick beard and have briefly combined it with a shaved head, although I think it presents as trying to compensate for the baldness, rather than embracing it.

Are there any alternative looks I could try? I’m thinking something from the days when receding hairlines were rocked in the mainstream, like an 80s/90s action hero mullet, or something Dickensian. Maybe I could use my ability to grow a thick beard to my advantage.

Any ideas?

If it matters I’ve got fair hair with blue eyes, but my beard is quite black.

Receding hairlines have never "rocked", ever.
You could try a Jedwood/Pat Sharp spiked look.

The fact is you now have a big Tefal forehead and you need to accept it and get on with your life otherwise by the time you get to 50 you'll be totally conscious of it and never go out.

Short of getting an op or wearing a wig, what can you do? Mine started to fk off at 27. It gets a number one all around once a week. Enjoy looking 15% harder.

I assume you realise no one cares these days, and you'll get more ridicule for trying to cover it up than you ever would for just ignoring it and shaving it all off.

Comb overs, fransiscan monk, hair thickening products all look naff. Don't do it, embrace the shave

Whenever I see a shaved head and big beard I think of the Billy Connolly gag "no hair and a beard, looks like his heeds upside down"

Two generations before me were bald so I always strongly suspected it was coming my way too

I shaved me head when I was about 19 and it's been that way ever since (now 47)

Just accept it and move on. As said above, nothing worse than trying to disguise it as that just draws more attention

I start receding at 14 - much piss-taking through my school years. At 24 I was going grey. At 32 I gave up, shaved the lot off and it's been that way ever since. Just don't forget hats / sunblock when required.

Trouble with those is that you also have to wear a top hat with some telescope parts and old cogs stuck to it.
