Can't find a better forum on PH, so I though I'd try lounge.

My daughter is finishing primary school tomorrow and starting high school in September.

The new high school had an induction day about 2 weeks ago, where among other things, they gave her a booklet with weekly homework to do over the summer holiday, which she has to hand in on day 1.

Is this normal?

She seems to feel obliged to do it, although I have told her that if she doesn't want to do it, I'm happy to tell the school that it is inappropriate to be handing out homework when she isn't even a student there yet.

Regular school, not private school.

Probably to find out what level she is at to be able to place her in the correct class forceach subject. Credit, general, foundation etc

Why not just make her do it all in one go when you inevitably ground her at some point over summer?
Its not going to be the most taxing of homework.

Mmm, well the school could go off the
SAT exam results which she just received if they want to grade her.

It really irritates me, like it sets a bad example in life. Similar to what my reaction would be if I got a new job and the employer sent me a load of stuff to do unpaid before I started work. Plus I got through a grammar school plus two degrees without ever doing or being asked to do work over summer.

I think there is a bad example here, but I don’t think this is it.

What kind of work has been set - perhaps the school is just hoping the kids will keep their hand in and not turn up on day one having forgotten everything?

One of our grandaughters is with us this week as her school has already finished. She’s going to senior school in Sept and my wife has been running through spellings and maths with her.

All the etreaming at our school was done by government algorithms based on Sats. Utterly useless.

I'd suggest this homework is unfair. Kids should be enjoying themselves.

I’m teacher and no, it’s not terribly normal, at least at the age group.

I’m a bit of an outlier on HW in my profession but I’d happily do away with it except for targeted revision tasks. There’s very little evidence setting HW is a worthwhile exercise and too often pointless tasks are set just for the sake of ‘that’s what we’ve always done’

It’s a bit more than that though. Homework is about initiative and the ability to complete a task unsupervised which are skills you need in later life.

However todays teachers have a high propensity to set homework but not mark it. Which is a bit st really.

I’d anticipate that the OPs child will wonder why she bothered by the time she start her new school.

The secondary school I went to always set homework for over the summer, assigned by your new teachers for the new school year due between Day 1 and 3 of the new term, from leaving Primary up to leaving Y11.

I dont see the issue with it at all tbh.

You mention about jobs and allocating tasks before being on payroll - yup thats exactly what I have done with a number of intakes recently that are non-experienced hires, sent them a load of detail, publications, links, etc. related to the client they are going to be working on assignment for and then asked them to write a short piece on a topic or subject matter to get their take/perspective and get them into the mindset before meeting the client (virtual or face to face) when they start

Teachers/schools do seem to be doubling down on kids after the pandemic, probably trying to catch up with some notional standard that they believe they have missed.

My kids school went all out on kids about attendance last year, notwithstanding the cowardly buggers didn’t even open the school except to kids of key workers in the two years prior to that.

It’s a non issue. I always had summer homework and it didn’t do me any damage or stopped me enjoying myself.

I agree with it, doing it unsupervised and showing initiative. My son wasn’t issued any and I don’t think it will good for him. Homework is to consolidate learning and I feel 8 weeks of nothing will impair his mental maths, reading, etc.

If you feel it’s unfair just tell her not to do it. Nothing bad will happen unless they use that to sort their classes out.

Is on the job training which is paid as part of the salary not the place for that? Did you check if the work conflicted with any other activities going on in their life before they were obligated to you by paying them?

If I got handed a load of work to do before actually going on payroll and starting work, to me that would mean one thing: I had made a mistake taking the job and I'd need to immediately need to start looking for a new one.

I used to get homework over the summer holidays from the comp I went to back in the 80s. Why do you think it inappropriate?

It seems to me like it's a great idea, and gives the school a level to work from.

Why is everyone so offended by non issues these days?

Because she hasn’t started yet.

And? It's not like she's not going to be there in September - it's just a bit of prep ready for when she does start, I doubt she's expected to spend three hours a day buried in the books.

Because she is not a student there yet, but the school has taken it upon themselves to unilaterally dictate how part of the summer break is to be spent. Without the school explaining what the purpose of the homework is.

Have you contacted the school to ask?

Exactly how long do you estimate this homework will take?

As others have said, it's hardly going to be onerous.

Then ask!

Most of our local grammars set some form of homework for their forthcoming intake. My personal opinion is that the level of homework set depends on the results orientated nature of each school. The school Vikingette1 & 2 went to is horrifically results orientated and V1 switched out to another school at 6th Form and became a more rounded student as a result.

I asked Mrs V. about this (who is a KS2 primary school teacher) and she says sometimes it can be to simply to ease the new intake into the way a school works and get everyone to common level.
