Sometimes you come across people who fail to see what everyone else sees, however obvious it might be. An example. Someone we know. British Asian, Muslim, woman, never married, in her forties, not that attractive nor blessed with great intelligence or a sparkling personality. Informs us she has met someone online in India. She goes to see him. They marry and he moves to the UK. He is good looking, a Hindu and about twenty years younger. As soon as we were alone I said to my wife that he only married her to get a British passport. She agreed. Recently we found out from a relative that he got his British citizenship and has left her.

We haven’t seen her yet and when we do I’m not sure how we will broach the subject. But how could she not see what was so obvious to everyone else? Was she so naive to think that he had fallen for her charms? Or did she know on some level but dismissed the thoughts in the hope that he might really come to love her?

People can behave quite strangely.

You'd be wasting your time speaking to her but let immigration know.

A false belief that she is more attractive than she is, so a young handsome man is what she believes is rightfully hers.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she repeats this exercise once more too….

I agree with you in terms of people being deluded, I`ve come across many, especially when I was working in retail whilst at uni; however, what intrigues me is your need to mention the ethnicity of said individual as though this bores any relevance to the topic of your post.

If i didint know any better, I`d assume you may have some romantic resentment towards said woman, as why else would one be so infatuated with another persons love life, I`m genuinely struggling to see the purpose of this post.

Wasn't there some TV program about older ladies falling in love with younger men abroad and then getting scammed out of life savings etc?

I am struggling to see the purpose of your comment unless you are getting offended because you think it is a racist that I mentioned her background. Which would be rather bizarre.

Perhaps I was being ageist, sexist and lookist too. Should I rewrite it for you: one person met another person on the internet and married and then one person left the other. I am sure that is no longer offensive to anyone but not sure how it provides an example of people being deluded.

Moving to NZ just before a global pandemic can make seeing people in the U.K. more problematic!

I can’t remember exactly when they married but yes he was with her for quite a few years. Definitely at least five.

I seem to have triggered some sort of nerve, in all honestly, I wouldn`t say you`re `racist` however, in terms of your post regarding the deluded nature of people, mentioning it, whether for `context` or any other reason is a bit silly, for instance, if I was to describe this interaction with yourself to others, should I refer to you as "the British guy in New Zeland?" (hypothetical of course) I think not.

You do realise, that comments can be made just as effectively without the need of sounding like a bigot right?

It's no wonder we are where we are with garbage like this posted.

I am Muslim and read nothing offensive whatsoever in the original post.

I used to work with a massively obese Australian man who had gone to Russia, married a Russian girl, bought her back to Australia and then got divorced not once, but three times.

He loved it over there and used to like showing me his photos which would look like the guy from the South Park "Make Love not Warcraft" episode stood next to some statuesque, borderline model looking Russian girl.

He had been fleeced so badly that he was so skint he was renting a place miles from the office in one of the poorest regions of Melbourne. He wanted some cup a soups for lunch and as I was going to the Supermarket I said I would get them to which he replied "Is it OK if I pay you back on payday?".

Often it was only us two in the office and we spoke at length about his situation and he claimed he didn't regret a single thing and would do it all again.

He soon lost his job with us because he was absolutely useless, and last I heard was the Australian benefits agency contacting the office to confirm he used to work for us.

Utterly deluded, don't know if he genuinely thought these girls liked him, or if he just didn't care.

It seems completely relevant, given the circumstances and the context. Honestly, I have no idea how people manage to get offended by things like that.

I am deeply offended that you mentioned the internet. They could have met through writing letters or sending text messages.

It's people like you that.........oh, I don't know.........do something or other that's probably bad.
