Duty on shipping family jewellery into UK
Discussion
Not sure where this fits best so will try here. My mum and dad emigrated to South Africa a number of years ago, and my mum passed away recently.
There are around 6 pieces of jewellery that belonged to my mum that my dad is going to send me from SA, and I’ve found a company to do it (parcelabc) but they have advised that since the value I’ve specified is £500 (it’s more sentimental items, so priceless in that regard) I may need to pay customs of £150.
Does this sound correct? I thought that was more if you were buying things and shipping them into the country, as opposed to personal items.
The shipping co have asked me to deposit the 150 with them ahead of time and they’ll refund if no customs charges are applied, but wanted to see if anyone here knows what the likely charges may be, if any?

Mine was a “Brexit benefit” but suspect yours isn’t related to Brexit (as you mention South Africa)
