Most new players don't master dice combinations, so leave single checkers, or blots, exposed.
You can quickly hit these using stacking dice combos, and once you've got two or more of their checkers in the bar, advance in stacks, straddle the bar into your home board, and aim for a lockout.
From there, a thoughtful bear off can often result in a gammon, and sometimes a backgammon.
