Basically wanting to buy something advertised on uk Ebay but item is in Australia.when I go to finalise the payment it still shows it under Australian dollars .how can I be sure that I won’t be overcharged and get the proper exchange rate ?

I use eBay a lot and I would also expect prices to be converted to GBP, on the listing and all the way through the checkout process.
Maybe the seller has excluded themselves from Ebay managed Payments or they are not using Ebays Global shipping programme? If the latter is the case you could be presented with a suprise invoice from the courier to cover VAT, ECCN charges etc.
If it were me, I'd contact the payments dept via the help and contact tab and ask them before buying. Just select payments then type call me into the assistant and they should call you back within 1 minute.
Sorry I can't provide a definite answer but I've been hammered with import charges/Vat etc when buying from Japanese sellers who don't use GSP so it's definitely worth checking with the eBay payments team, they are spot on 99% of the time.

I think this listing on uk ebay is a sort of sponsored type worldwide ad and not on the global shipping program ,I was tempted to just pay in the dollars in the hope I’d get a confirmation email with exchange rate but decided now it’s not worth the risk .a shame as nice item but leaving it

Ebay exchange rates are not too bad. I buy a fair amount in the UK with NZ dollars, which in historical terms is cheap for me.
When I moved to NZ it was 30p to the dollar, now it is around 50p.
How exactly would it work if I pay 300 au dollar via Ebay as a guest ,if it doesn’t automatically calculate to pounds at checkout how do I know I have paid correctly amount or notWhen I moved to NZ it was 30p to the dollar, now it is around 50p.

I since tried buying from another seller with direct bank transfer method but it seems like the sort code system is slightly different and just says wrong number from uk system
For an international transfer you need to ask for the BIC and IBAN for the person you are paying rather than the sort code and account number.ESSEM123 said:

It depends - if you list your UK item with worldwide shipping, it will be shown to buyers in an approx conversion to their local currency but at the checkout it'll be in £ and the buyer can choose how to pay. PayPal used to automatically convert, but you can turn it off for both PayPal and eBay checkouts if you wanted to pay in the original currency (if you have a fee-free card it's cheaper that way).A lot of the eBay China stuff is listed in either USD or (bizarrely) AUD, but available to purchase in the UK.
