I know it's my own trumpet but...

I had a mega weekend of achievement, planted 300m of new hedge. Mostly hawthorn/blackthorn with some dog rose and other mixed tree whips. A group of eight people worked hard for two days.

1100 trees planted, that hedge will last over 100 years unless bulldozed, wildlife and people will enjoy it long after I am not here. I was wrecked on Sunday night but fine now so no probs.

Could not have done this without good support from friends. They know how I feel about the help they gave.

PH people do do some amazing stuff - go on say what good things go on all the time that rarely get reported.

I’ve nothing to share of my own but wanted to say that’s a fantastic thing to do and a wonderful way of looking at it.

1100 trees planted.
Well done.
For my part I did a Halloween event and collected 300 for a children's charity. Want to do it again next year.

Awesome stuff

I've been involved in lots of hedgerow projects myself as a volunteer and for work thumbup never done anything like it with friends though, fantastic!

I love these little feel-good type threads. Nice to see some humanity and, it's rude to toot your own horn unless asked, so it's also nice to share anecdotes.

A few months ago I came across a car that had broken down on a roundabout. Was with two mates. We got out, pushed the car to a safe spot 100m down the road, then ran back to my car and got moving again. Nothing that we'd shout about, but it felt good to help someone out. The driver was a young girl, possibly a student (I live near a student town) and she was a little flustered as she was blocking a roundabout and the local Uber drivers weren't being particularly kind to her. We stayed with her for a bit, a friend smoked and offered her a cigarette (which she was happy to take), when the RAC van appeared we wished her luck and went on our way.

Karma goes around and comes around. A week or two ago, I was at a friend's wedding in country bumpkin land. It wasn't a massive reception, but there weren't many cabs around and we'd pretty much collected the entire fleet to get us all back to our hotels. I was in one of the first cabs to leave, which was to do 2 further trips. Having just left the venue, I heard a (sadly familiar) hiss and knock. The cab had a flat tyre.

There were 3 of us in the cab (and the driver). We hopped out, fully suited up, and got to work changing the wheel. The cabbie was grateful for the help, he could have done it himself but between all of us, we were on our way in a matter of minutes. Not only did he waive our cab fare as thanks, he also turned a blind eye to (obviously alcohol-free...) beers being drunk on the 30 minute drive back to the hotel. There was some amusement in the hotel the next day when some folks were moaning about their £40 cab fare and we said "wait, you guys got charged?"

Free trees are pretty widely available and if you have a bit of land you can take advantage of these schemes. Quite a lot of these schemes are tied to educational projects but many are not. They vary from just providing the whips (which can be expensive as stakes and tree guards are more expensive than whips) to some schemes which even do the planting for you

With the successor to Agricultural Subsidies coming in, you might find farmers willing to let you provide free labour plant in return for sunbsidies for habitat improvement

We've planted thousands of trees on our shoot. There are several acres of maturing woodland of diverse native species that weren't there (being poor quality hill pasture) 20 years ago. In the past we paid for the trees but now able to take advantage of the schemes above.

That's terrific Summit, I'm off later to do some planting for Heart of England Forest. Also looking forward to learning hedge laying in the coming years.

We have done all this before but I can retell my good deed from a few months ago.

I was behind an old lady at the checkout in Sainsburys and as she was about to pay she realised she had left her purse at home.

I told her not to worry and that I would be pleased to help her.

We had her trolley emptied and her shopping back on the shelves in no time.
