Having seen it on tv, I actually went to the exhibition in Manchester containing various dismembered creatures, including humans confused looking back I’m not sure why.

Gunther von Hagens

My wife used to watch his stuff and would be absolutely riveted to it - me on the other hand, would leave the room.

As far as sensitivities go. Da Vinci... totally acceptable. Full VR AI interactive 4D anatomy, outstanding.

Everything in-between, creepy as fk!
Agree entirely - when nobody knows what lies beneath the skin, as was the case for Da Vinci, (and I think Michelangelo) there's a real reason to 'go in'.

But now, I'm not a fan of Dr Gunter

I'd rather my body was on display with every blood vessel visible in an astonishing flourish than rotting 6 feet under ground.
(bks actually, I'm being cremated).

The mystique of death needs replacing with some anatomical reality to get rid of the 'passed to the other side' clubs but there are more educational ways of doing it and a weird guy with a giant ego is not the best.

Pretty sure the body worlds exhibition was open until Covid.
I seem to remember a story about using bodies of executed Chinese prisoners
The guy was seriously creepy

I went to the bodyworks show back in the very early 2000's. Most of it was very interesting, but the row of human foetuses in jars showing the growth per month and the dissected heavily pregnant woman was bypassed very quickly.

There was an exhibition of this in Blackpool maybe around 2004 or so
Some of the exhibits were better looking than some of the locals

Remember thinking it was creepy, weird and also uninteresting at the time. Assumed there are whole websites and TV shows devoted to it now.

Went to the Bodyworks exhibition in Berlin a few years back and at first it’s genuinely interesting to see the body in all its intricate glory but then you start seeing too many exhibits of bodies in various poses like a ballerina or a guy on horseback and it becomes less about the workings of muscles in the body and how it all works and more about being a crowd pleaser and just a demonstration on how good they are at ‘plasticising’ various bits of the body.

Got a bit samey as you went through it all and I left wondering if the people who donate their bodies to these guys actually realise that they’d end up as a tourist curio rather than an educational tool.

The best exhibit imo was the couple having sex. I did wonder if they’d knew what was coming

I saw this many years ago (late 90's or early 2000's) in Brick Lane, London. The human and the hare with just the blood vessels left was amazing.
Also the lungs of a smoker compared to a non smoker. That model should be used for advertising.

Agreed.

I saw the same exhibition. Was fascinating and creepy in almost equal measure.

What was that all about?

Was it educational?

Exploitative?

Medically interesting?

Why did he wear that outfit?

Was this a late 90s fever dream... I'm remembering correctly aren't I?

It felt like a Victorian theatre operation crossed with a Damien Hirst piece. People donated their bodies right?

How would that go down in the 2020s?
I have all parts on a hard drive somewhere downloaded off limewire. thought it was great.
