been getting fairly regular 10-20% off codes on ebay with certain sellers , when you use the code is it 10% less money for the seller or are ebay contributing towards this?

I believe the ones for specific sellers are just sellers signing up to an event, and therefore fund at least some of it themselves. The (much rarer) site-wide or whole category ones are ebay funded I believe because I assume private sellers wouldn't be massively in favour of auto-discounting 10% without being asked.

Pretty much. Some sellers can set up their own discounts and the sitewide ones have funding from eBay. They'll usually give some notice to sellers in the category so you can submit applicable products to them to go on the carousel/search results.

My dad bought a fence panel on eBay and turned out the seller had no visibility of the discount at all - it came up in conversation.

So at least in some instances they haven’t got a clue.

Same experience here - I purchased something mundane like a kids slide or bike and the seller was oblivious

I now build up a list of things I need to buy in near future, monitor costs and wait for a discount weekend

Airtags and engine oil seem to be reduced as part of discount offers

Have to monitor prices to make sure you really are getting a discount
