I bought a Vax carpet washer from Amazon, which decided to catch fire today. Amazon want me to return it for refund which is fine. Trouble is I don't have the box any longer, so I’m going to have to make do somehow. Anybody ever sent something this big/awkward back to Amazon. Are they fussy about how it goes back? The chat bot is not very helpful. It’s going to be nigh on impossible to pack it in a way that garantees no damage in transit.

bubble wrap and plenty of parcel tape?
take pictures before and once wrapped.
they will likely skip it as soon as it arrives.

I just don’t want to give them an excuse to keep hold of what is a lot of money.

Amazon refund you as soon as the collection is confirmed. They do not wait to receive the item. No need to worry.

I have successfully shipped large stuff by it wrapping in many layers of bubble wrap then using an outside wrapping of rubble bags and using lots of clear packing tape at different layers. I have no idea how the recipient deconstructed that lot.

I doubt they’ll claim it caught fire in transit.

I have rubble bags, gaffer tape and some small bit of cardboard for padding, that’s going to have to do I think. What’s infuriating us I only took the box to the dump last Sunday.

I would hope that providing pictures of fire damage would be enough to not require it to be sent back.

google amazon live chat to get through to the human chat.

Its well hidden on the website that you will never find it but google it and should find it. Explain it to a human and most times ive found they will just sack it off or arrange the collection themselves.

If you're a regular Amazon buyer you might find you don't even need to return it. I've had several items that I managed to get refunded without a return.

Get off the chat bot and onto the proper online chat. Explain to them that the crap they sold you caught fire, offer them photos and tell them you no longer have the packaging or the inclination to waste more of your time arranging return. You can often get them to make a refund anyway. I have.

Last one was an expensive glass item that turned up in many pieces. Got a refund after explaining I didn't want to waste my time returning literal rubbish to them.

I persevered with chat and think I was speaking to a human in the end. Because I mentioned heat/fire/smoke they want it back for a safety inspection, which is fair enough. Picking it up Tuesday.

Are they sending a replacement out? Ship the dead one in the replacement's box.

Old rugs or towels. Anything really. Also I'm sure they do a service where they collect and sort it out themselves or has that service gone.

I'm just getting a refund, said they couldn't offer a replacement which would have been preferable.

The collection driver might not even be driving a Ford.

I've done returns where you don't pack the items at all, just drop them somewhere locally where they print a sticker and stick it to the item.

Of course, there's a decent chance they just throw the item in the bin, so maybe not an option here, but may be worth asking.

I returned a vacuum cleaner to Amazon. I only had a box that would contain the body of the vac and the hose coiled up inside, I I gaffer taped the metal pipes to the outer box - no problem with refund.

Years ago I bought a trampoline from Amazon c.£100 that was a 2 man delivery. The box was missing the fixings. When I called up, they suggested I buy them and they would reimburse me. I did so and it came to nearly £60, so I asked for a replacement. They sent a replacement, but told me to keep other order.
