I think my wedding ring is lost. Cold hands. Got to park with kids. Gone. Titanium £50 jobby.

I fancy a gold ring but most high street places are about 3x spot price which just seems like a monumental piss take.

Can anyone here recommend anyone who’ll machine gold jewellery/rings?

I can’t help but think it won’t be more than £100 + materials for a gold ring?!

I’ve seen people casting them on YouTube then polishing up etc which seems viable but the wastage concerns me… a few hundred quid in gold could soon add up so better to just send a cad file to someone?!

I have a hunch turning it would create more wastage. Especially as I’d assume you’d be turning from something cast already, unless you want to start with a bit of billet hehe

Also add in the cost for someone making a 1 off.

You'd get a lot of wastage cutting it out.

I can only recommend William and Julia Shaw jewellers in dodworth, Barnsley.

Jewellery made on site in a workshop, proper honest family bench jewellers.

They made my wife’s engagement ring to me design and shaped wedding ring, cad was an option but we went old school. Julia carved the wedding ring in wax and it was cast from that.

If nothing more they will tell you why you want should cost if it’s done right.

I just had a platinum off the rack job as I just wanted plain

I assume wastage isn’t an issue in a machine designed to collect it.

But yeah, not ideal for a DIY project nor a professional outfit if they can’t collect the majority of waste.

I’ll take a look at the Barnsley makers.

I’d assume £200 to make it, then materials, give or take.

Go see a professional jeweller.

When my brother was doing his appreticeship the company he was working for was asked to turn some gold for a customer. The customer would supply the gold, they knew the exact weight of the billet supplied and said they would expect 'X' amount of gold swarf once the job was complete.

The MD declined the job.

We can make you a gold ring from solid but you'd need to supply a 32mm dia bar 3m long and obviously we would keep all the swarf and the bar end wink

Swarf flies everywhere. It's hard to gather it all back up.

The wastage and excess material required for work holding would make the costs silly.

Yup. The only material ‘we’ tend to take care with is brass, you still lose a load of swarf when you’re careful about cleaning up.

That’s even when dry, fk that if you’re using coolant hehe

I haven’t worked with gold obviously, but wouldn’t be surprised if new tooling was required - cutters at least, it all costs.

A quick look on Youtube suggest that gold is similar to brass in the way it machines so trying to harvest the swarf would be a total nightmare.
