And no, not at the same time.

Football. Couple of pints before the game, shared interest in the game and if your winning hugging strangers when you score a goal wink if that’s your thing.

Join a running club, great for meeting people, you don't have to be thin , fast or even fit.. They have groups for all levels, starting with a jog walk etc

Tennis is usually a brilliant community of like minded people for some reason. I have met many interesting people through tennis over the years, who have become friends rather than just playing partners.

The father of a school friend, who was a pharmacist and magistrate, told me about exploits with his brother, which involved motorbikes and shotguns.

They both had shot gun licences and would go to the beach at Ainsdale at dawn when the tide was right out. One of them would sit facing backwards on the back of the bike whilst the other would ride the bike up and down the beach. The one on the back had a shot gun and would blast away at any seagulls or other sea birds that happened to be within range.

It was the 1960's and they were simpler times.

Golf - most clubs have a weekly roll up/monthly competitions which get you meeting people, then if you choose the right club you'll be at the bar meeting people after too!

Same here. Been with my tennis chums on a few organised tennis holidays too. Meet more people, play as much tennis as you want then the usual holiday stuff, food, booze, sightseeing etc.,

I’m also a guitarist, that gets me out n about playing with friends and bands.

Why not ? Archery on horseback is a thing. Easy on a bike as you can have a pillion archer.

Canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, open water swimming, learning sailing / rib boating

Cycling, community litter picking, green laning, history groups, helping church with maintenance

Helping with resto of canal boat, camper van, old bus, fire engine. I’d like to do some project like that, but need help, which would then lead to trips in in etc

I watch hubnut, he used to have a bloke help him

All things I’d like to do - maybe not the history group or church

Where are you op

Is the correct answer for three reasons:

1 - It is very sociable. You can chat with partners whilst you play
2 - You can play for all of your life. Plenty of octogenarians and older at every club
3 - The handicap system means that anyone can compete with anyone else.

Decent clubs will have evenings to welcome new members, "buddy" systems if you don't know anyone, "get into golf" sessions for complete beginnners and more. Golf clubs are not the stuffy places they once were, they cannot afford to be.

That's very true, there is always a good sense of camaraderie within Golf and while I finally managed to stop playing about 15 years ago, it was already quite democratic then and as you say I imagine it has been forced to carry on evolving.

My main issue with it was the game itself - not sure why I played for so long, about 20 years. I absolutely hate it biglaugh

The problems with golf are:

1. It’s basically just st, it’s like a sort of outdoor snooker (also st). There’s no risk, no danger, no thrill, no speed (those buggy things don’t count).

On top of that

2. The hole is too small.
3. It’s too far away.
