From a log of a ships arrival in the US, we are thinking it's a UK or European port as the crew were mainly British/Swedish.

The cargo might narrow the port down?

There is a map of sea ports here - of course these are current ports - so the port mentioned in the document may no longer exist.

My initial thought is it looks like Mej.... and perhaps ending in era or similar.

Without any more context, my guess is Messina.

Before reading any of the detail about where it was headed my first thought was Tangier.

Still makes sense if the destination was the US.

Google Maps gives Bizerta as an alternative spelling which makes it even more plausible.

Bizerte/a was the arrival point for refugees fom Serbia in the First World War and the departure point for Tunisian Jews in 1961, so its quite possible that emigre ships sailed from there too.

I thought it looked like Bogota, but unlikely, as Bogota isn't on the coast.

That was my thought too!

Is there an accent on the last letter?

I'd say it's the cross of the "t" - like the dot of the "i" positionning is a bit loose but "Bizerta" looks a good bet.

Thanks everyone, son is heavily into Family History, my grandfather is amongst the list.
Here's a pic of the top half of the page, it does look like Bizerta.
