so I popped into Asda (sportscity manchester) on my way back from work last night to buy some crates of soft drinks/ beers

I needed a trolley in order to carry the crates etc, I initally asked the guy on security who is next to the entrance who I need to speak to get a trolley opened for me (I don't carry around coins, like most). he said he didn't know who to speak to.

I then walked around the shop until I found a member of staff - "I can't open one for you, go across the road to Timpsons, they sell trolley keys"

I went to timpsons, it was closed.

then I went to customer services and was told "no, we can't open a trolley for you. either go to Timpsons or get money out then get change"

I explained Timpsons is closed and i'm paying on apple pay so can't get money out of the machine.

by this point I was a little annoyed and stated that all I am trying to do is get a trolley so I can spend more money at your shop, it's that simple and you used to open up trolleys for people"

the response was "lots of people spend money at our stores."

I asked why they don't sell the trolley keyrings here - "we sell out too fast"

I couldn't be arsed anymore so just drove home.

my friend who works at tescos says it's never an issue there and they will happily open trolleys to allow people (who dont have a £1 coin) to buy more at once from their stores

If you'd have gone to Waitrose like any normal person they'd have carried it to the car for you.

I've never even thought to ask a supermarket to open up a trolley. If always gone to the little cigarette /lottery ticket counter and bought something to get cash back. Or struggled with a basket.

Didn't know this was thing! biggrin

The Morrisons near me gave up with all that coin stuff several years ago.

My local asda & in fact any of the local supermarkets don't use those stupid little chain £1 coin things any more. The area must be up & coming lol!!!

No problem at my local Aldi or Lidl, they will unlock one for you if you forget your £1 or token thing.

Should have asked them to open a packet of Andrex from the isles for you and wipe your bum whilst you were at it.

I often have the same issue, instead of asking the red carpet to be rolled out I:

Have a check round the trolleys, you will find one that is loose or doesnt need a quid

Wedge in a standard Yale key to the pound slot - works 95% of the time

Hampstead Waitrose offers a sedan chair service where they carry you and your shopping.

the red carpet to be rolled out ? lol

I checked to see if there were loose / unlocked trollies around before messing around spending 20 mins asking staff /q'ing up at customer services etc!

I alway keep a pound coin in each car for this reason. I wish all supermarkets required this, would save on the number that end up strewn across the car park.

How dare you suggest the OP behaves like and adult and gets organised?! 2023 is all about being contactless and VFC! (except when you need a £1 coin for a trolley, or the retailer doesn't accept cards, or there's a power cut..)

The sense of entitlement really grinds my gears.

Why should a supermarket make exception for anyone? There's a reason the trolleys require a coin, because people steal them.

Get a coin or token and keep it in your 335d (mapped) coin holder for just this situation and don't be the knob who thinks the shop rules don't apply to them.

Absolutely this. There's absolutely no need for a coin or trolley key, just stick your house key in there, works perfectly.

Or get one of those trolley unlocker keys... Or use a house key like others have suggested.

Or you know, just carry a coin like most people.

You could have bought a tin of corned beef and used the key to unlock a trolley. Cheaper than the £1 tokens! It's the exact tool which was used back in the day when I worked the trolleys at Safeway hehe
