Is it time to bin bank holidays?
Discussion
Why do we have bank holidays? The banks must have enough staff to run a full service by staggering holidays the way private industry manages.
Posted letters to relations enclosing a cheque for good exam results, no delivery on Monday as bank holiday, despite first class, unbelievably expensive too.
Transferred money from online bank account to transfer the funds, oops no way have to wait cos its a bank holiday.
Why does England put up with bank holidays? The roads are full of families heading off for a holiday, the cost of holidays are greater because it is a bank holiday. I just do not see the point of driving to sit in a traffic jam and the same on the return journey.
Time we joined the 21st century and binned these ancient traditions.

Most countries have more public holidays than the UK… I’ve worked on plenty of them though, and never felt the need to go for a weekend away because it happened have an extra public day, I’d rather use the day when it’s less busy. The only thing wrong is the naming - why a ‘bank’ holiday…

I think you need to join the 21st century - you’re posting a cheque.Posted letters to relations enclosing a cheque for good exam results, no delivery on Monday as bank holiday, despite first class, unbelievably expensive too.

All wrong.
Should have just bank transferred from your phone. Instant. Costs nothing, no wait, and both you and them don’t have to faff around with a piece of meaningless paper.

Hardly a first world problem… can’t that sort of mail wait an additional day?! None of my business granted but it seems a little entitled to be pissed off about such a minor issue.…..

The first Macintosh, inside the case is the signature of the main design team moulded into the case. All wrong.

It’s rather quaint that you still think you can set the delivery date of a first class letter. Mercdriver said:

So from my perspective I’m happy to put up with a bit of minor inconvenience to allow a few more families a little longer weekend together.
Tarquin will have to wait to cash his bank anyway.
Can't see what the objection is (to getting rid of bank holidays) as long as the same number or more are added to existing holiday entitlement.
Quieter roads, all shops open etc etc, what's not to like? It always rains anyway. The only downside I can see is that you won't get double time plus an extra day off if you work, if you're happy to do so.
I think Xmas Day is sacrosanct though...

Happy to bin them as long as they are added to my annual leave allocation.
That’s how we do it at work.Sort of have to being public transport but it works out far better. Getting them as a block is far more useful than a random Monday off (in this case) as you can actually have a holiday away rather than a day trip to B&Q with every other fecker.
