I've recently given the Sudoku puzzles a go and as much as I enjoy the sitting crossed leg in a chair, peering over my spectacles, poised with a little pencil.

Simply put, what's the point?

They are a straightforward brute-forcing exercise. Sure, I could finish it slightly faster if I really cared about whizzing through with tactics and techniques, but ultimately, it's a case of elimination.

Where is the pleasure?

Think I'll stick to the crossword...

Think you need to try some harder versions.
Some are near impossible

The level is called Evil, do they get much harder!

(Aids turned off by the way)

I'm no Rain Man, but the whole thing seemes futile.

Maybe I'll kick the skirting instead...

It’s simply a way of exercising the mind and distraction / relaxation. If you like the exercise, there are harder versions to keep you interested. If not, find something else.
I quite like them & the logical challenge they pose.

Those ones are computer generated and can be very boring. Have a look at the “cracking the cryptic” channel on YouTube and search back through some of there older videos.
A) They show the advanced logic techniques for solving
and
B) They demonstrate the solving of some very elegant and clever sudoku puzzles created by some very clever humans.
It might change your mind or maybe they’re just not for you. Everyone’s different

“What’s the point?” Like most things to occupy some time between birth and death.

Took me 2 minutes 30 seconds.
It's not even close to being one of the harder puzzles
As I previously stated certain puzzles are near impossible, that example wasn't even close.

Ah, a man of culture!

CTC is what got me into sudoku, wordle and advanced crosswords. I started by brute forcing sudoku too but now like to try and complete them by deduction without noting every possible answer per square - much more satisfying when you get them fully solved.

I checked the level and it came back easy.

I can do some of the sudoku at a hard level.

I'm no good at crosswords, especially cryptic ones. A friend is one of the writers of crosswords for the FT. He writes them in his head while walking the dog.

What's more pointless? Doing an activity you plainly don't see value in, or whining about it on the internet?

You need to advance to killer sudoku, that has more merit. For kids it would really enhance their ability to do mental maths.

Ah, but I was actively avoiding my real work by perusing PH. Meritorious actions!

For what it's worth, I do sudoku but keep all the info in my head. No notation or list of possible numbers. Makes it a mental challenge for me, aside the standard requirements of logic.
