Have you ever heard a word being overused to this extent, ever? You could almost say the excessive, some times tedious and often exasperating use of the word is... unprecedented.

So the question is why is this word being so excessively and unnecessarily used and inserted into news reports covering all manner of topics? And that is a point of relevance, where are we hearing the unusually high frequency occurrence of this word.

Can it be curtailed please to anyone listening!

Why is this being discussed on a motoring forum? I think the answer is "MX5".

add in "global warming", "racist", "extreme" and "crisis"
All rendered meaningless through over use.

Whatch the YouTubers Goonzquad, a guilty pleasure of mine but they have dumbed down "Epic" and "Insane" to the point where everything is and they have nowhere to go but add "super" to it.

can't see how the word 'unprecedented' could be misused without being 'the wrong word'. a situation is either unprecedented or ...erm.... NOT unprecedented - it's one or the other and there's no grey area in between.

do you have an example of a sentence containing the word that we can analyse?

Iconic. When familiar, well known or famous would do.

It's now part of the lexicon of hysterical TV weather reporting,
unprecedented rain, heat, cold , wind, snow ,when it's no such thing.

An unprecedented weather event would be a shower of Fanta.

It all started during the pandemic. Suddenly, everything was unprecedented. I included it in the 'Words I'm sick of hearing' thread at the time.

London based news website reported an incoming 'wall of snow' for my part of London this weekend. When you drill down into the article they are are forecasting as much as ..................... 0.5 mm.

I must have told them a million times not to exaggerate !!!!
