Hello - wasn't sure where to put this.

I need to change the first impression my tie gives...

It was recently suggested that I needed to wear more of a "sharp" tie. Apparently it is obvious that I'm intelligent so I don't need to look "intellectual" (his phrase), in fact it would be good to counteract the impression I give of being a thinker by showing, at first glance, that I am dynamic. Apparently people assume that thinkers are not dynamic.

Please don't sue this as an opportunity to try and score points.

What does as sharp tie look like? Colour? Pattern?

What about tie clips? I have one someone gave me that I've never worn.

What are you wearing this tie for?

Don't get too caught up with this sort of advice.

Stick to a sombre colour, narrow stripes, half Windsor knot and you won't go wrong. Bottom of the tie wants to be just above your belt buckle.

Keep the floral designs for weddings and leave joke ties for Christmas day.

Sorry, I'd be thinking more about the douche that gave me this advice than what tie I need to buy.

Can you show us a photo of the tie in question that was criticised?

I'm more surprised that you still wear a tie. Outside of weddings and funerals I couldn't tell you the last time I wore one.

What professions even still wear ties regularly nowadays, and where tie ‘sharpness’ is noted?

Clearly the professions where how you look is more important than the calibre of your work.

Can't stand ties... They're just a noose that failed at life.

Lots of posts and no real help for the OP.

Hard to know for sure what the person means without seeing the outfit but I would assume it means dress a little more modern.

Paul Smith ties. Bit more than I would spend myself but even the most "conservative" designs are standouts to anyone who appreciates a good tie and I think they do represent value for money like a good watch. I hate wearing a tie but if I have to...

Need to know a lot more, your age for instance, what profession, if you were a 25 year old estate agent we would advise a blue tie with a knot the size of your head, if a funeral director we'd probably say no Homer Simpson ties.

Must say I've not seen a tie in the wild for quite a while, I assume they are dying out.

This has made me think; why have I a lot of ties hanging up in my wardrobe when I've not worn one in years?

Jon Snow showed the way.

He wore multi-coloured silk ties for years presenting the news.

OP - how does somebody create the first impression of being either "an intellectual" or "dynamic"? And god alone knows how a tie would affect that impression......

People will decide what kind of person you are when they speak to you and get to know you. Unless you wear something really idiosyncratic a tie will have NO IMPACT on the people you meet or do business with.

Same, I went to a funeral recently and wore one, I've also purchased a new one for my own wedding in April but apart from that, not worn one for a few years. Used to wear them daily.

A tie should be on the waist band of your trousers not above.

Sober colour, discreet or no pattern and a shirt collar big enough that you look and feel comfortable, rather than a con up in front of the beak but not so big that you look like an adolescent school-boy

OP here - I originally had details of profession / position etc in the post but was aiming to keep it focused on the tie.

My suits, shoes and shirts are all fine. My beard and tie are "intellectual". I'm going to try an new beard-look later this week.

I am in profession where I have worn suits and ties for all of my 30 year career. I am now very near the top. Being seen as intelligent is very much a good thing in the role, its just that I don't need to demonstrate the intelligent thinker part, I need to counter some people's assumption that as a thinker I won't also be dynamic.

I think I'll go for a strong colour tie. Suits tend to be navy or dark grey, shirts white, so I think maybe a darkish red.
