First Footing - anyone still keep the tradition?

We don’t anymore, but I was the one that got chucked out at 11:58pm in our family.

We used to go to my cousins house for NY every year and without fail I’d be thrown out with some coal and bread to wait for the clock to change before I could come back in…..

I’ve heard of it, but never seen anyone who’s bothered to actually do it.
It won’t die out completely but is doomed to stay a minority activity.

I remember doing it as a child (also NE), but it's not something we do anymore. There is literally zero chance of me staying up past midnight anyway. NYE can FRO.

Parents were from North East & Scotland and they used to make me do it when i lived at home, they are both long gone now sadly and my step kids would have no more interest in this than fly.

No, and we won't. NYE is a quiet thing in our house. A bottle of fizz and later to bed than usual.

All this business of hope for a new year as a new beginning is usually dashed by watching the news on New Years Day with death, destruction, war and inflation. A mince pie and lump of coal is a nice tradition, but it does not work.

It’s definitely died out from what it used to be.

I was thinking it’s just the past few years as I remember going out when I was in my 20’s and literally just knocking on any door that had lights on and being invited in.

Then I realised that was nearly 50 years ago

Now I don’t think anyone does it at least where I am in SE Scotland.

I think it's not such much a Northern thing, more specifically the North East around Durham, Newcastle etc

You'd get blank looks from most in Yorkshire & Lancs if you mentioned it.

Defo a Scottish thing. First footing. Bring a lump of coal in. I guess from ages back when everyone had coal fires and you went round your neighbours. Bring a bit of coal to keep the fire symbolicly going.
My parents do it.
