I had to smile today as a car passed me; over 20 years ago I lived in a nice tenement in Stockbridge (Edinburgh) and used to park a 50cc scooter outside on a busy street. One morning I went out to find it on the ground and some public spirited person had left a note stating she had witnessed a large Mercedes reverse into it and drive off, giving me the reg number. There was a couple of scratches on the bike but it had seen better days in any case as the staff used to use it as a forerunner to an uber eats style operation (well ahead of it’s time, in fact way to far!). I recognised the distinct private number plate as a local car but never caught up with the driver (not sure what the point would have been in any case).

Over the last 20 years the driver of the Mercedes must have moved to where I live now, and I’ve seen him a handful of times driving past (in a newer model Merc), and I always mutter “fker” under my breath when I see him. This is clearly ridiculous, and today my pavlovian response to seeing the car again made me smile.

What is your longest held grudge over something relatively trivial?

There are families in my home town who are on the 4th generation of holding the same grudge over the same falling out.

As a specifier in construction projects, I never used Armitage Shanks products following their inability to fulfil an order I placed with them for a bathroom wash hand basin in 1976 when I was building my own house. (they did accept the order then failed to fulfil it thus spoiling my design intentions) So that's almost 50 years.

I am terrible, not with my family, but organisations and businesses etc.
If crossed I get absolutely fixated on revenge and making good. I have actually got worse as I have got older .
My wife rightly tells me I will run out of shops, pubs , restaurants and even countries if I keep this up .
My latest is a long burn where I will get the last say and I spend a lot of time plotting my revenge .All legal and no one gets hurt I might add.

This is a pretty good shout, to be fair.

Lots of other travesties, but are after this (remaking Italian job, Pelham 123 etc). Sure, there are some older dodgy sequels (robocop 3, lethal weapon 4, I’m looking at you) but they’re not nearly as black and white on the “my god how did you do this so badly?” Crapometer…

British Airways. Never forgiven them for messing return flights about to get me from Heathrow to Manchester after getting back to UK after a fortnight's holiday. The delays, lies, stress and incompetence lives with me a quarter of a century later.

I have not flown on a BA flight since.

About 18 years and counting against Jaguar and their dealers after the way one treated me. I did get some pleasure when I drove past a year or 2 later and they had a Zafira on the forecourt.

Volvo and their dealers is relatively new, only 4 or 5 years, similar reasons...

Similar but Autoglass. They supplied a new windscreen that promptly cracked within a few days. Had an absolute mare getting another one from them without paying the full as new price. My argument was that screens don't crack within days it takes years and years. Never used them since and that must be 15 years ago.

My wife was treated pretty badly by a phone company, it’s been 18 yrs so far, I still can’t mention them as a possible alternative to our current one…hell will probably get a bit chilly first.

Thing is you all cancel each other out. For every armitage shanks hater there’s an opposing Grohe hater etc etc so in the end it all levels out.

Probably about 7 minutes. Utterly pointless waste of time and energy.

Owner of a army surplus/outdoors store once blocked me in with his new Mk2 lime green Mondeo (which must be around 2000) and refused to move until his girlfiend [sic] had finished shopping. Ever since then, I walk past his shop and think of all the stuff I've bought online from Amazon, eBay etc instead of from him. Even more satisfying seeing him in the shop bored with no customers.

I get amazingly petty now with adverts on YouTube. Let's say I watch a couple of ads and then the video fails to load and I get another set of ads. Then when I'm in a store and see product X that I need, I'll buy product Y just to spite product X because they delayed me on YouTube. biggrin

I’d rather walk the rest of my life than own one again.
