I’m hoping for assistance on this (Probably from chaps ‘of a certain age’!). We, the wife and I , have moved to a new area well away from existing friends. To initiate a bit of social interaction with new neighbours (Mostly quite ‘County’), I was thinking of a drinks do on a Sunday morning, I remember my parents and their friends doing this quite often but I can’t find any guidance on the format. Is this still ‘a thing’ or am I too out of touch? I recall drinks, black velvets etc. at around 11:30ish. Anyone remember this sort of event? Advice on invitations etc.?

Nice idea to try and arrange something to meet people.

Invites, black velvets etc all sounds a little try-hard (Margot from Good Life) to me though.

Call it a housewarming to meet the neighbours, say it’s drinks and nibbles from 12:30, and ensure you’ve got lots of booze. Can’t go wrong. wink

Will you be putting keys into a bowl at the end?

Invite them for drinks for about noon - Those whom you like then get invited to stay for lunch (eating at about 2/3pm)
Ensure that you have plenty of food for those that are invited to stay.

I did this for about ten years - but I would take them to the local pub for drinks - This meant that I could leave the undesrables in the pub, rather than invite them back for lunch.

Sounds a logistical challenge to me.

Years ago my neighbours had a similar affair, I wasn’t asked to stay but it was all a bit odd, the 2 sitting hierarchy, even down to the host discussing what the special ones were getting for lunch.

I won’t elaborate as it was a very specific quirk but it transpired the couple had got together under very odd circumstances.

Just have an open house. People drop in when they want though out the day for a drink, bit of cake crisps etc. We did this and we ended up outside in the sun until midnight with about 12 people staying on. Good fun.

I'd agree. Make it open house from say noon. Watch what you drink though, may not be a good look to be pissed when you 1st meet new neighbours!

PS: where do you live that you have sun until midnight?

If not booze as the main aim, I'd say it would be safer to just say you are having a BBQ and they are all invited, you can put out nibbles, drinks etc then do a few burgers.. Can have a few beers on ice too of course.

What on earth are "black velvets"??

When we moved, last 2 times, we knocked / popped a note through all the new neighbours and invited them for a sunday BBQ, very informal, on between X and Y, pop in if you can, would be great to meet you, no need to bring anything, here is my number etc

Worked well and got to know some good neighbours
