Maybe I'm overthinking this but today I received a message from an ebay user with the title referring to an item a sold about 3 weeks ago.

The message, in slightly abrupt english basically says that I sent the item to them by mistake and please pass on the correct recipient's address so that they can forward it on. So, potentially just someone being honest and helpful but I'm confused by a couple of things so haven't yet replied.

1) How could I have got the wrong address? I use ebay's automated postage label generation and additionally I have no history of selling to the member that messaged me.

2) How would the seller know to contact me? As far as I'm aware there would have been nothing on the label to link it to my ebay account and this was certainly not a unique item.

3) Why would the messager be happy to send it on and incur postage fees?

I'm probably being far too cynical here and I can't really see how this is a scam but ebay does attract them...

BTW postage was by good old Hermes and tracking simply says item is late. No other info.

Sounds weird
I’d ignore, only engage if the actual recipient asks where it is!
Only communicate through Ebay

Have you had feedback on the item / showing as delivered?

Cheers both. Sorry, I knew I'd missed some detail. No feedback on that item.

Maybe you sold something to someone else at the same address, or to the same person using a different user name at that address, and you managed to print two identical labels.
I know because I once did this. I think the printer was out of paper or something and the first two labels in the print queue were the same.
Thanks to a bit of detective work by Interparcel and me, a very helpful incorrect recipient and an understanding and patient correct recipient, it all got resolved.

Is it possible that this is a generic email that is sent to thousands of sellers in the hope someone bites so they can take it to the next stage of the scam?

If you booked delivery on the Evri website, go to your order history and it shows postcode / name.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I'm glad nobody singled me out as a paranoid nutter which is how I expected the thread to go!

We have a winner! I went back through all the other items that I sold about the same time and found one with an address in the same town as the account that had messaged me. I got in touch with them. They know each other and had exchanged some bits and bobs including my item and the one I sent by mistake. I've messaged the original buyer to apologise and the item will be on the way directly to them and sender compensated.

Faith in humanity restored but a sad sign of the times that anything remotely out of the ordinary immediately sets alarm bells off.

I try to use 80& offers but they never seem to be active when I want to clear stuff out and I'm very impatient! Once I've sorted stuff to go, I just want it gone. Putty in ebay's hands!

Does this promotion apply to any active listings or just the ones created after the offer was activated?

It applies to ones being listed not already active
It is relatively easy to kill the existing ones and relist them after accepting the offer
