I know someone who recently sold their large Victorian house and bought a tiny terrace house in the posh end of the town.

There is only on road parking but the street is full off newish (I presumed leased) BMWs, Audis and SUVs and also slightly older 4 x 4s like Discos

I am amazed at the sacrifices some people make so they can keep up with the Jones

I have a time share in a small pony, unfortunately we could only afford the night time.

Perhaps it's not so much keeping up with the jones, as avoiding eye contact with the Smiths?

Maybe they just don't need a big house anymore, why is there this thing that if you have money you also should have a big house; me and the wife only, if we came in to money we most certainly won't get a big house "just because"?!

Quite a lot of assumptions going on there, almost certainly based on your own prejudices rather than any facts.

Agreed, as soon as my kids are fully independent then a downsize will be on the cards to free up time and cash for cars, travel and getting equity flowing downhill to get the kids a deposit on a place of their own.

Hanging onto a house much bigger than needed whilst my kids get caught in a rent trap until they're 40? Nah, not my plan at all.

A very odd thread. Someone unknown moved somewhere for unknown reasons.

Wondering who you think are the middle class wannabes here, the couple who downsized or the neighbours in the street who are leasing/owning nice cars ?

Bizarre thread, especially the comment about leased cars, who gives an actual toss?

What car does your friend drive? You mention yourself it’s the posh end of town and the cars match that?

As others have said, an odd post. I get the strong sense that you are a fairly judgemental person, so I suspect this may be lost on you, but what concern of yours is it how others live their life?

Leasing a nice car might be very cost effective and they may have several reasons for wanting to be in a nicer area.

Stop judging others and look inwardly first.

Yeh, I agree to a point, but the new house is worth just as much as their old house, except they have to park in the next street often and the house is tiny. However they now live in a 'village' now which it is not, used to be a few hundred years ago but everyone around there still calls it a village. When Coop closed their shop in the area, it was hoped Waitrose would move in, instead it was Aldi and the locals actually opened a petition to try and get a Waitrose store.

It is not the moving bit I don't get I just don't get why pay so much for a house because it is in a posh area

I don’t think it really matters that you don’t get why other people make the decisions they do.
If you sent a memo explaining that we all needed to run things past you to make sure you’re aligned, then apologies I’ve mislaid it I’m afraid.

Maybe find a hobby or adopt a pet to fill the downtime?
