I remember a weird form of pride when I got taller than my dad.

It’s come back to bite me.

I’m 5’11”, 52, and my skinny rail of a 12 year old daughter has now matched my height.

It has been a couple of years now.

First year of upper school, my height/just below.

Then steadily increased.

I am 5' 9" - his mother is 5' 11" and son is 6' 4". My daughter is 5' 10" at 22 years old.

its alarming how quick they grow now, i'm 5'10" and my 11 year old lad is 5'4". i remember my school photos back in the 80's and we were all about the same height give or take a few inches, his class photo and there are other pupils in the same class just about reaching his shoulder height. No idea whether this is a diet or genes thing but there does seem to be a trend towards people becoming either giants or midgets.

Humans are getting taller at a rate of around 12cm per 100 years and I find it slightly concerning from a design and build point of view that the world is not reacting to this.

Some studies even indicate that this trend is accelerating, and that teenagers now are averaging about 1-2cm taller than teens born only 10 years previously.

We should be building houses and other premises with taller doorways and higher ceilings, yet our design standards haven't changed in decades. In fact, ceilings and doorways have been lowered in comparison to many house types in the Victorian eta.

Our internal doorways are 6' 6", and I know a few people who have to lower their heads whilst walking through ordinary houses and offices.

If things carry on like this, our grandchildren will suffer terrible problems from stooping constantly whilst walking round an average home being built today.

Same goes for desks, plane/train seats, cars, and so on. I regularly see teenagers these days who look they are sat in a kids seat.

I'm 6'7". My father is 6'3" and at around 14-15 yo. I was taller than him.

I sincerely hope my son won't be as tall as I am. It's nice 20% of the time, a pain (especially now that I'm getting older) 80% of the time. My father's height is perfect.

I know what you mean. I'm a hair under 5' 7", so fairly short, but this means everything is comfortable. Every car I get into has loads of room, every plane I sit in has loads of room, every cinema seat, every table, every bed, and I rarely have to duck for anything, or consider any doorways that I'm walking through... and so on.

I see friends and colleagues (or more often the kids of those people) who are 6'5 - 6'8 etc, having to duck all the time for ordinary doorways, and suffer the discomfort of folding themselves into cars and planes.

No thanks. It looks like way more hassle than it's worth.

My girls are naturally shorter than I am, both about 5' 4" and I'm 6 foot.
My son, however, is about my height give or take an inch but he's built like an ox.

I'm 6'1. My youngest son was always ahead of my eldest in terms of development, he was shaving at 13. When my youngest was about 13 and my eldest 15, they both hit my height at around the same time. But within a year, they were both 6'3, which is where they stayed.

I always think it's quite nice when your kids exceed you at anything, height, exam results, career, earnings etc. I always wanted my kids to do better than I did, which is why I set them such a low bar in most things.

I'm the shortest of us 3 brothers at 5ft 11.5ins biggrin

We were all much taller than my dad and now my 21 year old lad towers over me at 6ft 6ins and my younger 18 year old is taller than me as well.

My 21 year old was in the passenger seat of a hired Fiat 500 convertible on holiday. We had the roof open so his head wasn't stuck against the lining.

I went to go and pay for petrol and walking back he looked like Donkey Kong in MarioKart.

I can counteract the increase height! I'm 6', my wife and both daughters are 5'5 to 5'6 - I was expecting the girls to be taller than their mum, my sister's 5'10 ,but the tall genes have bypassed them!

I'm 6' 2", my offspring are 6'4" and 6'6", both in there mid teens when they passed me some 10 -12 years ago.

The gap between me and them is getting bigger, old age is seeing to that.
