Buying Jewellery
Discussion
My wife wants a ring for a special birthday. I know absolutely nothing about Jewellery and it just seems an utter rip off to me .
My wife has had lots of Jewellery over the years and I always feel we are getting ripped off.
We live in the South East and in the past have bought in the lanes in Brighton quite a bit and a few times in Hatton Garden.
Last Brighton experience was utterly horrible. it appears most of the shops are all owned by the same people these days and the way they sell is unpleasant. We have not been to HG for about 5 years .
It will be diamond and probably about £6k I expected.
May I have an recommendation for a trusted source , we are happy to travel.

How’s about something from the Chopard ‘Happy Diamonds’ collection?
If you know the ring size required, you could even order the ring online, or visit your local Mappin & Webb or Goldsmiths branch.
My Wife has a Happy Diamonds ring, necklace and earrings. She’s had them for nearly 20 years and the ring and necklace gets worn every single day. We’ve yet to experience any issues with quality.

Anyway, so what you going to spend your 6K when it’s your turn?
This looks flippant but is a point well made. The retail mark-up on jewellery is insane. If SWMBO has her heart set on such things consider a trip to Hatton Garden in London and, crucially, be ready to haggle.Anyway, so what you going to spend your 6K when it’s your turn?
Ignore the flippant remarks and get in touch with ecain63 of this parish (I've hyperlinked his username to his profile page for you).
He used to post regularly on a thread called "Unusual job on the bench today" in Watches, and he's a reliable , trustworthy jeweller. He can supply stones and also create bespoke pieces from scratch, and the thread above does document a very complicated ring he made from scratch where he did precisely that for Mrs QQ's 50th birthday (hers was a complete surprise though). You can find that thread HERE, it should be on around page 51-52 on normal pages, it's on page 13 when set 80 posts per page. My recommendation isn't based on anything other than an exceptional ring handmade by a very skilled craftsman who was also a fantastic person to deal with.

Far from an expert but just to share in case it’s helpful, I was in Istanbul weekend before last and my mum bought a ring from a proper jeweller, paid about £1,600 for a 18ct white and yellow gold ring with 5 diamonds for a total of 1.4 carats, colour H and clarity VVS (guess VS2 as not specified).
I’ve never bought jewellery myself but I was quite shocked at the price, thought something like that would be 4x the cost!
It does look good to be fair and very shiny lol
