The solstice was yesterday, so can someone clarify what i'm not understanding here: why did the new age/neo pagan etc gather at stonehenge for this mornings sunrise.

longest day was yesterday so shouldn't they have gathered for Thursdays sunrise?

The moment of solstice was around 9 pm yesterday. The first sunrise to celebrate the fact it had happened was this morning.

^^^ that.

Lots of ancient religious holy days are the first day after a lunar/solar event. Christians used the first Sunday after, e.g. Easter

People I know who follow the wheel of the year celebrated yesterday but also are attending events today.
Due to timing of sunrise /sunset there is a bit of overlap I guess
