This one got me thinking, so I thought I'd seek the wisdom of Pistonheads for the best answer...

A genie—or some other kind of mystical being—points you towards a swimming pool and tells you he'll fill with it any material, substance or items you wish (gold, diamonds, oil, butt plugs, toilet rolls, whatever). You then get to keep whatever the pool is filled with. The only caveat is that you must dive into the pool from a height of ten metres before you get to keep your loot.

What are you filling the pool with?

  • the pool has a capacity of 60,000 litres
  • you have to jump/dive into the pool wearing only the skimpiest of Speedos
  • the pool is of a 'standard' size and shape
  • you cannot mix items in the pool, you can only choose one

Do you have to dive head first? Or can you just jump from 10m?

Loose and slightly scrunched up B$10,000 notes (Brunei Dollars - Each note worth about £5800)

That should prove for a relatively soft landing and also a relatively large payout.

Used £50 notes not pallets of brand new ones from the bank. That’s going to be like jumping onto concrete.

Oxygen-18 enriched water. Seems to cost about $200 per gram and I'm sure I can swim in it easily enough

And if going down the money route I'd recommend Scottish £100 notes as you can just pay them in to the bank anyway

Items. Hmmm

Line the bottom with gold bars then a couple million quids worth of diamonds on top, throw in a couple hundred waterproof Rolex’s then fill the remainder of the pool with water I will happily jump in.

I’m not sure, maybe create the worlds biggest trifle and leave me be for a few days.

Scorpion venom, a quick Google suggests it's currently $38m a gallon.

60,000 litres is 13,216 imperial gallons which works out to an awful lot of zeros...

I'd want to dive in wearing some sort of deep sea diving suit though!

According to this article at least: https://www.iflscience.com/is-scorpion-venom-reall...

You'd have 60,000 litres of something that the whole needs more like 1 litre of. Albeit the article doesn't really explain why if so little venom is needed it's so expensive, given that scorpions aren't super rare or hard to come by.

Google suggests the most expensive “thing” by weight ( and I guess volume) is antimatter.

Not sure if diving in would result in buoyancy or interdimensional travel though…

Even just filling it with an average vodka (£50/l) would net you £3,000,000.

Perfume would bring in even more with some bottles many £10,000s per litre, so even conservatively (£1000/litre) you could be talking £60M.

All without risking blunt force trauma to the head.

Another way to maximise the loot is to have a small cross section pool but very deep. You can fill it with diamonds or other and then just cover with water for the last 2 metres or so.

For example a 6sqm pool could be 10m deep, 8 of those diamonds = 48 cubic metres = 843m carats, at $1000 very conservatively that’s $800 trillion plus

If the only limitation on the pool is that it's 60,000l capacity, then you can make it relatively short and narrow but very deep. Then fill the bottom with something small and valuable, but not so small and valuable that possessing enormous quantities of it will crash the price when you try and sell in any meaningful amount. Banknotes from small countries probably fall into this category, and scorpion venom certainly would as it will also be perishable, and DeBeers would just flood the market and crash the price if you tried to sell large numbers of diamonds.

I would build my pool as a 3x3m square, 6.6m deep. I'd fill the bottom 3m with tightly stacked gold bars, with the remaining 3.6m above them of plain water. That should be deep enough to be safe to jump into from 10m, and wide/long enough to be sure you'll safely land in the water from a 10m height. A cubic metre of gold weighs about 19 tonnes, each worth approx £51m. That's about £8.7b, and more or less perfectly safe to obtain within the rules. Just sell a bar or three at a time when you need money, and you and your descendents will be minted for generations.

Shirley having 60,000 litres of bull semen or diamonds would devalue it. I imagine it would have a short shelf life and need refrigerating. And as I'm at work, and I'm not going to Google t, wouldn't that been more semen many times over to impregnate every cow in the world? biggrin

You don't have to sell it all. You could hold some back for... personal use.
