I find going to restaurants a real faff especially in large groups.

Any restaurant showing this sign would get my business.

That happens when you either go to the wrong restaurants, or when you go out with the wrong groups - Sometimes both scenarios apply.

I’ve found restaurants and the card machines are getting very good at splitting payments of late .

When we bring the bill we don’t run away and never bring the card reader over.

Ok in a big group to give you discussions on splitting but when there’s just one or 2 of you it’s so annoying, you would think they would want you gone as soon they bring the bill, in some places I’ve waited 10 mins between getting the bill and the card reader appearing

Big part of the reason I like places you can pay on a app or when you order

Excellent, you’ve shown yourself to be the worst kind of person to go for dinner with, well done.

Intelligent staff ask whether cash or card when you ask for the bill!!!

That's why you should always ask for the card reader.

Good point, Turn7.

That's another annoying thing - the length of time between me deciding I want to leave and actually leaving.

1) Get the attention of a staff member to ask for the bill (can take 5-10 mins)
2) Get the bill (can take 5-10 mins)
3) They come back to ask for payment (can take 5-10 mins)
4) They go away and get the card machine - another 5 mins.
5) Faffing around with the card machine / menus / WIFI /bank connection can be several mins.

And this is just when there are two of us dining.

"Are you paying separately or together?" seems be be the default question now.

Even 2 people ordering 2 pints together at the bar, I've been asked that.

And last week, me and the missus went to a cafe for breakfast and when I went to the counter to pay, I was asked if I wanted to pay separately or together.

I did comment that I can't see my wife being too happy if I tell her to pay her half of the breakfast!

"Get out of the middle lane" as a sign of advice on motorways. There are sometimes gantry signs relaying the same message, but we could have something in simpler language for those that don't get it.

To be clear on my point about individual billing, I mean I want a bill for me showing what I ordered and the price I need to pay. Not just the option for multiple people to pay by card/ cash. To stop all the faffing about with the bill working out who had what where the person who ordered all the courses and side dishes and extra drinks etc. can pay their share.

I try and choose pubs where I can pay at the time of ordering food to get around a lot of these issues.

Me too. I go in a really nice cafe (a sort of up-market greasy-spoon) quite of often and when I go to pay they always ask if we want to split the bill. And in the curry house I was in last night (shout-out for Chislehurst Royal Parade) the guy did a good job of going round a table of 11 collecting cash or card payments for ones or twos.

Yep. Agree. But then they would just move into the outside lane or get confused on 4 lane motorways. smile

Or you could just split the bill evenly and not stress about who had an extra portion of chips.

However I suspect this point is moot as I imagine you dine alone.

I don't quibble about a pound here or there but do object to paying more than twice the price of the items I have consumed.

When you go into a shop how would you feel if the checkout operator put though everbodys shopping together and then just presented you with a bill for the whole lot to sort it out?

Hardly the same is it? That would be comparable with splitting the bills of the entire pub / restaurant rather than just the people you’re dining with. I think it’s fair for non-drinkers to not split the drinks bill but if everyone’s having roughly then same then just let it even out over time.

But it never does even out over time.

The same people always stuff themselves with all the courses and side dishes. Which they are quite entitled to do but they can't expect their fellow diners to subsidise them every single time. But the current systems do not make it easy to navigate. I'm sure they would be equally happy to pay their way.

Better than those who order the most expensive dish and expect to pay just an even share of the bill.
