As in the age concern related groups. Any experiences?

It’s for my dad (wf10 postcode). 77, spends most of his day looking after mum and has trouble coping as a result. Currently on a good path but I’m looking to give him some options once or twice a week to get a break and some headspace, with people in the same boat to chat to etc.

If it's about getting out more and mixing, look up your local U3A. There should be a range of options for him.

My dad is 81 and he joined a walking rugby team that gets him out.
They all then go the pub and get smashed!!!

I’ll take a look at u3a.

I’m just thinking something regular and weekly when we can schedule the carer/cleaner and he can go do something crafty with like minded people. He is an old school engineer, former metallurgist and machinist, so has a level of skill but also would be happy just to make a brew and tell/listen to stories.

One of his early coping mechanisms was alcohol which to his credit he asked for help on and has successfully addressed, so pub is out.

If you haven't already done so check out your local community centre and churches and GPs.

They'll likely have some pointers on groups even if it's just a "sit and natter" type thing.

U3A is definitely a good shout. There are all manner of activities so something is bound to pique his interest.

It's nothing to do with Age Concern it's an independent national organisation. It's for all ages not just old people although my local one has a sub group called Maker Space which has a slightly younger demographic. Its a unit in an undustrial estate and has a wide range of kit and machinery for woodworking, metal working, electronics, 3D printing and so on. I used them recently to route a groove in a set of solid oak shelves as my router is naff and the two old boys in there did a much better job than I could have done, in exchange for a donation and some biscuits
It was all very friendly and welcoming, I'd think it's worth suggesting your dad gives it a go to see if he likes it.

There's one near me (not far from you) and it looks like a really great setup with positive feedback from those who attend.

I'd actively encourage giving it a go, at worst he could just give something else a try instead, there's nothing to lose.

I don't suppose there's a heritage railway near him is there? I'd bet his engineering knowledge would be welcomed and put him amongst like minded people.

There is the Middleton railway about 15 minutes drive away if that might be of interest, a good astronomical society in Pontefract, a good camera club in Castleford.

Volunteers welcome for the Friends of Saville park group and a great green bowling club there also in the same grounds.

I used to live in WF10 and could do some more digging for things to do if required….

Another thought, there’s a college on Asda roundabout that does adult ed courses of all types, I looked at learning to weld there. If not for the course itself, maybe for the networking in the area.

Lots of retired miners doing stuff.

Big RSPB reserve at Fairburn needing volunteers, same for the large reserve at Swillington….
