I was doing some musing earlier about which year I have lived through is my favourite.

The thought occurred that imagine having the power to go back in time, pick a year, and the world remains as it is in that year, but your life progresses, you age as do those around you, so things like promotions at work etc still happen. But what year is your Halcyon year, and more tellingly how old were you then?

Mine is 1996.

Looking back I travelled a lot! Just looking at flights I managed 2 to Hong Kong and one to New Zealand, plus Boston in the USA.

I started dating my now wife.

There were some amazing cars around, seriously if you had to pick a year & stick with it the cars of 1996 would do most of us.

I was 19.

Probably some point between 1993 when I was 21 and 1996.

Everything was comparatively affordable, cars were in that sweet spot between being reliable without being overly complex, same with bikes.

Virtually no internet to speak of, music was still played on CDs, laserdiscs were still available and Danny Dyer hadn't made any films.

1976. Mainly for that memorable long hot heatwave summer.

I was 14. Playing football on the airfield with jumper goals. Exploring the old airfield hangar, fuel dump and control tower. Riding an unregistered BSA Bantum on the airfield annoying the locals.

The US Bi-centennial paint schemes on the F15/F111. The heat at the Mildenhall Air Fete Airshow.

My dad’s Datsun 120Y in turquoise blue, black vinyl roof and Frey Bentos wheel trims reg plate was MKT 789R.

1979, remember riding my Fantic Chopper moped from Newmarket to Mickey’s tea bar on Mildenhall base with mate on his Fantic GT. Pit stop for a fag and cup of tea at Red Lodge.
The music was brilliant that year too.
Halcyon days.

1976, just turned 17, I was going out with the most stunning girl ( definitely punching above my weight) and we had the summer heat wave as well.

1988

It was my last summer at home from college, working in my parents' shop on the Main Street of Tobermory, which was right in the centre of everything that was going on. It was also the summer of celebrations for Tobermory's 200th anniversary- and there were events and parties everywhere.

One year later I was finished college and working offshore.

10 years earlier for me, 1966, for much the same reason. Six idyllic, never to be forgotten weeks together in Tenby...

I've just realised her funeral was exactly a year ago today. Although I was invited I couldn't bring myself to go.

I think this is the sweet spot. It was a uniquely promising and manageable time with just enough modernity.

If I'd known what today would look like in comparison I would've returned to my roots under the sea.

Passed my test and got my first car (1981 Chevette)

Met G, the dirtiest and poshest girl I have ever been in a relationship with.

Got another job that paid more than the £28 ish a week the YTS paid out, I was a millionaire in my mind being on £600 pm

Saw Nirvana in Manchester.

1987 aged 21

Loved my job (lots of travel), had a great car, bought my first house, and had just started what would be come my first long term relationship.

It seemed like the planets had aligned and life was good

Apart from a few exceptions, whatever year it is now.

Now is better than not-now.
