I've realised that I barely look at PH now. I used to be on here looking at posts daily, replying etc, but now I can go weeks without coming on and looking. I have less time than I used to, but I don't think that is the main reason why I spend less time on here; truth be told, I don't know why I spend less time on here.

I assume it's just the PH Circle of Life, older blood tails off and newer blood comes in.

Anyone else notice they're spending less time here?

It does proffer the question, what are you spending your time on now “Mrs Bountyfullpuppies at number 37.” Or have you found other social media that satiates your appetite for automotive content.

I would imagine if I used alternative avenues of social media my usage may tail off a bit, I don’t have access to most popular sites, so PH it is, I find most of the content on here lacking sensationalism and fairly engaging, therefore, suitable for my tastes.

Weirdly, I've only recently decided to start browsing the forums again after a number of years of not doing so.

For me, I'm done with 'social media' for anything other than marketplace browsing. I also have very few people anymore who I can or want to share anything with, which is probably what has drawn me back to the familiarity of this forum again.

Basically my only foray into social media apart from a business use of Linked In which I barely use. No FB, Instagram,TikTok etc. Never had them. I still come to PH regularly though there is less focus on cars that there used to be and it seems as though a fair number of the most original and brilliantly eccentric posters have moved on.

About the same amount of time as ever but the categories have changed markedly.

I don’t do other SM except TikTok and that is mainly for language learning, as I watch clips in the various languages I’ve been learning eg snippets of Spanish of Portuguese news or videos for Mandarin learners.

I spend less time on PH than before. Perhaps I’ve been on here too long.

You mean you don’t enjoy the 47th debate this week about EVs vs ICE and whether ceramic coating is a scam?

From someone whos been around from the TVR start

There are certain periods of time within that circa 20 years where PH has at different times been very amusing, sometimes very useful and then for me very interesting from a societal perspective when SM became bigger and bigger..

The last 5 - 7 years of social decline and how it manifests in an anonymous but policed environment is a very interesting watch, on top of that you have very difficult economic times for many people and you re on a social platform mainly occupied by car people, some of the old school ice and the new enviro aware ev crowd, theres so many friction points bubbling away.

Its very interesting watching how people react or ignore posts these days, ive tested many theories with different posts leaning in certain directions to see how people react and its always revealing in some way and for that its interesting, even changing your name to my current, means less people will engage when you post anything related to a good, fun or expensive experience smile

But its very predictable what will be posted now & how people will react or not react and my interest is dwindling tbh, i only ever pick it up while we re having coffee together in bed of a morning (every morining)

Car wise, not interesting at all, apart from the guy chopping up an aston and building his own design, incredible! I wouldnt bother sharing anything about our car or holiday ventures anymore as there s waaaay too much jealousy on here (due to uk financial climate i guess) and to do so would be quite unempathetic if i m honest , so dont post much.

I am seeing a dwindling in interest on my part though and probably (as already mentioned on another thread) end to being on here at all, but i dont watch or read any other news at all, so it keeps me abreast of things i m actually interested in, so will continue whilst i get a bit from it.

PH is where I get my news and it's my downtime during work time.

Spend too much time on here.

Ebb and flow.

I find that there are quite a few posters who are quick to wade in and throw their weight around and I am unfortunately someone who will bite.

So it’s useful to have a break for a while sometimes.

Do you have recommendations? I'm currently learning Spanish but haven't considered trying Tik Tok. I do use YouTube which counts as social media I suppose but my patience for adverts is paper thin. I may be about to regret that question.

In the spirit of contributing I'll add that the "Mi vida loca" BBC videos on YouTube are good for beginner Spanish if anyone wants to try it. Did a night course in a local tech recently and it was the Spanish teacher that pointed me at them.

The good thing about Tiktok is no adverts and lots of clips come with either subtitles in Spanish, English or both. I really like watching speeches by the Mexican president as she speaks quite slowly and clearly (she is also an empathetic and positive person and nice to hear that sort of speech as compared to a lot of negative stuff from other politicians).

I use Duolingo to learn languages. I know it doesn’t work for everyone (but I suspect a lot is to do with how long you spend on it each day - doing a couple of lessons won’t help much but if you do 30-45 mins a day it really does work).

You can watch stuff in Spanish on Netflix. Sometimes it is easier to watch stuff dubbed into Spanish with Spanish subtitles rather than stuff originally in Spanish (not quite as fast or colloquial).

Try reading Spanish newspapers like El País, although not all content is free.

You can also download Apps for Spanish TV, although I find that without Spanish subtitles I struggle.

Finding someone to speak to helps. I have found some colleagues at work to practice Mandarin with (although I get nervous as my Mandarin is basic and I struggle to understand them!)

Thanks, one of the things I've realised is I'm going to have to decide whether to speak castellan vs South American. I used to work with a very sexy Spanish woman (aren't they all) who hated Mexican pronunciation. I didn't understand what she meant until I started learning it. I don't hate it but can see they're two different ways of saying things.

That's the sort of stuff I should get more involved in and steer clear of the arguments in the the Reform, Keir Starmer and 5 years of Labour threads. There are a few people there that really make me wonder why I'm wasting my time. Though to be fair they probably think the same things about me. PH has been good to me when I've wanted some practical advice or got involved in threads about which car in history has had the best rear centre armrest.

Thanks again. I think news channels are a good approach, I subscribe to Duolingo but it's not enough on its own. I work with a few Spanish, I do laugh that one of them's called Jose Garcia and that's an instant airport extra questionnaire every time he travels anywhere near the US.
