In the old days I imagine that any celeb on a superyacht was doing it for genuine privacy reasons. But now their every move - including Bezos - is being papped, drones etc.

So, er, what does that leave? Bobbing around on a sea that most of the time they don't want to dive into, hoping it's calm enough to not spill your drinks, not too breezy to get a chill, needing sun cream every five minutes. Every step you take on the teak you leave a sweaty mark, every time you touch the chrome railing, so you need tons of staff to follow you around polishing.

None of it looks any fun at all. Is it a lifestyle any PHers aspire to?

Knowing Bezos it's probably for tax purposes he doesn't stay in one place too long!

Image and status - knowing you’ve been papped on a bigger yacht than someone else

Privacy is the USP, as is restricting access. It is far easier on a floating, moving platform than a shore-based hotel. There have always been the paparazzi with telephotos on RIBs around the SoF, and drones make this so much easier. Most larger yachts have anti-drone measures installed, but local restrictions or the desires of the guests/owners may mean they are not used.

I've been involved with super-yachts for over 20 years, and most guests seem to be enjoying their time. Sure they aren't cheap, but these people have deeper pockets than you can ever imagine.

Not an expert on maritime law but can you get done for eclectic taste sex parties in the open ocean?

The vessel is subject to the laws of the flag state when in international waters. Otherwise subject to the law of the country they are in. A simplification, but that's kind of how it works.

I’m sure there was a Mick Jagger quote in response to people saying they wished to be rich and famous, in that they’d have 90% of what they wanted by being rich

Agreed. I'd happily be rich, but what's the point of you can't walk down the street without people gawping, or interrupting your day for a selfie.

I think its funny when people talk of the royal family being privileged. I wouldn't swap my life for theirs. Its the worst kind of famous. 24x7 scrutiny and a whole bunch of rules about what you can or can't do.

Not the worst thing in the world, but not something I would choose.

No. No. They are just like us them Royals. When Kate was diagnosed with cancer, it took 11 weeks to do all the tests and (hopefully) see a consultant, and Hopefully sort out a treatment plan. And in the meantime, when she was in hospital the council woman in the bed next her definately kept her awake talking ballocks and demanding the staff came to her first. And when Prince William went to the Nursing station and asked if his wife come have the commode and a bed pan, they definitely tutted and said "Yes give me a minute" and were last seen leaving 20 minutes later with their coat on as it was shift end.
And when Kate was on a liquid diet, the auxiliary staff brought her fish and chips. Because the rich, and royals are definitely not different from the rest of us.
The rich (really rich) get rich how? Hard work? Or a few bloody good ideas and the hard work of people they eventually employ?

The Royals though? How do they pay their private clinics bills? With taxes from the people that they are "Just the same as, really"

Of course you want to be rich. You just don't want everyone to know or care.

When my mother recently had cancer her treatment was prompt and excellent. Same when she had a heart valve replacement.

I wouldn't swap my life for theirs just because they get private medical treatment, or any other "privilege" they have. Maybe you would, but I wouldn't.

Even if the Euromillions came in tonight, I would never be buying a boat. Can't think of anything worse. Still a friend has made a very nice living installing and upgrading A/V equipment into them so trickle down and all that.

There are plenty of very exclusive hotels in some very exclusive places that you can disappear into and believe you me if the numbers do come in, I will be doing exactly that for at least a couple of months.

I fancy a very nice camper, then maybe pay to get it moved about for the long haul bits. Turn up, all my bits and pieces are there, own space .

Obviously it entirely depends on your circumstances. As I said I'd happily take the wealth and the freedom that brings, but the celeb side (in whatever form) I would hate.

That said I'm a natural introvert (personality type, not shy) so hate being the centre of attention. The thought of a bunch of people hero worshiping me sounds like purgatory.

I don't get it either.

Seems like a fancy motorhome but worse.
