EBay wanting N.I number

Just wondering has anyone had any negative experiences of giving eBay your NI number since they’ve introduced that rule ? Anyone heard from HMRC ?

I’ve only ever sold bits and pieces on there , mainly spare parts that came with any car I’ve bought and some old toys i cleared out of my loft last year but it seems I’ve gone over the threshold of 30 sales per year or whatever it is which means I can’t sell on there anymore unless giving them my NI number

I’ve held off on giving them mine because I was always told not to share it with anyone apart from employers but just wondering what everyone else’s experiences are since giving them theirs ?
